Hi Sharon,

I have looked into your Elizabeth Leatherland, born about 1840 in Nottinghamshire. I am not sure if any of this info is helpful, but it may give you a few extra lines to research.

On the 1861 census, you said Elizabeth Leatherland was living with your Kilner/Kilmer family.

On the 1851 census, Elizabeth is living with different Aunt and Uncle - an Elizabeth (Leatherland) Bailey and William Bailey. The Aunt Elizabeth also has her mother living with them. The mother's name is Ester Leatherland, born about 1787 in Nottinghamshire.

On the 1841 census, Elizabeth Leatherland (b. about 1840) is living with her parents Thomas (b. 1809 Leicestershire) and Mary Leatherland. They are recorded incorrectly under the surname Southerland. (I looked up her siblings and she had brothers John (b. 1831),Thomas (b. 1838) and Joseph (b. 1846) all born in Nottinghamshire. The mother Mary dies sometime before 1851 (1847?). The father Thomas Leatherland's parents were Thomas Leatherland and Esther unknown.

I could find birth extracts for 7 children born to Thomas Leatherland & Esther. They were:
John & Sarah b. 1810 Leicestershire (twins?)
Elizabeth b. 1813 Nottinghamshire
Ann b. 1815 Nottinghamshire
William b. 1818 Nottinghamshire
George b. 1820 Nottinghamshire
Harriet b. 1822 Nottinghamshire (this extract is recorded under Litherland)
Selina b. 1824 Nottinghamshire

There is also their son Thomas, b. 1809 Leicestershire, but I could not find a birth extract for him.

I am not an expert in genealogy and the above information is just my speculation on who your Elizabeth Leatherland (b. 1841) may be. I just thought that sharing this information may be of some use to you.

Good luck,

Cheryl

Could they have been married BEFORE 1837??

The eldest child shown on the 1851 census was born ca 1837 ......... but he is only 14, and Mary is 46 while Joseph is 60 ................. which means they were quite old when they had John.

There could be older children who are not living at home by 1851

Sharon, we might have crossed in our posts! See my note above about Mary possibly being a Taylor.

They may have married just before civil registration commenced in which case you would need parish records.

According to the Kilner family tree on Ancestry, Mary's maiden name was Taylor but there are no marriage details given.

Hi Sharon, could you give us some more info, like their birth years, occupation, where they were in 1841, etc?

Are there any birth registrations for their children? - certificates should give Mary's maiden name. Like this one:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Emily Kilner
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1848
Registration district: Nottingham
Inferred County: Nottinghamshire
