Your great grandmother, Agnes Austin, had a sister Jane, born in 1880. She is with her parents on the 1881 census.

Does the name Ballard fit into your family anywhere?

Marriages Sep 1897
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BALLARD Elizabeth Jane Gloucester 6a 545 ****
Brown Fanny Eliza Gloucester 6a 545
Jones Charles James Gloucester 6a 545 ****
Newman Thomas Gloucester 6a 545

This could be a 'possible' marriage for the Elizabeth Jane who died?

Because the family came from Tewkesbury everyone is assuming that it was the Warwickshire River Avon, but it is possible that it was the Bristol Avon, which is not that far away.

If your uncle is correct and she "threw herself" into the river, then this could have been from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. This is a very popular!!?? suicide spot, being over a deep gorge, making survival unlikely.

If this guess is right, then there will probably be a report in the local paper, as there would have been an inquest.

According to a google entry, some bridges are known for their high rate of suicides and people will travel considerable distances to get to one of these, rather than choose one nearer home.

Ozibird - my uncle says she wasn't married, if she left any kind of an estate wouldn't this go to her husband or children if there were any. My gran received some monies but we understand there hadnt been a will so this was obviously through probate, but its worth having a look at your suggestion.

Christina S - yes my great gran had a sister Jane, with parents in 1881, in 1901 she appears to be in service in lancashire, I think she then gets married before the 1911 census and has a daughter age 5

Andysmum - I get the impression from you uncle that they found her around Tewkesbury area

Will visit my uncle again try and see if he can remember anything else, although he is 95 his memory is absolutely terrific and he doesnt get confused, but he may be able to remember something else useful, I just wish I could solve this one

Thanks to everyone for their efforts
