This is a real long shot, does anyone know how I could find out more information. My uncle has told us about a relative called "Jinny" this may not be her real name, he thinks she was belonging to my Grandmother's family either an aunt or cousin. My grandmother was Fanny Brooks born 1882 in Tewkesbury, Glos, her father was James Brooks born Monmouth and her mother was Agnes Austin born Oakengates, Shropshire. I cannot find any relative called Jinny either in the Brooks or Austin families. My uncle said "Jinny" was probably in her late 50s and that he was a boy of about 10 when she committed suicide by throwing herself in the river Avon my uncle is now 95 he was born in 1916 so she must have died around 1926
Any info on where to search would be a great help. Thank you

her full name could havebeen Virginia

Elaine Report 17 May 2012 19:27

Thank Ann, but I haven't found any Virginia's either, its such a long shot, apparently my gran received some money after her death, she didn't leave a will so she must have been a reasonably close relative, but I am stumped :-(

Jane was sometimes Janie and thus Jinny

I'd agree with Mike.
The Jinny in our family was baptised Jane.

Thank you both I will try some Jane's, I have found some, but came to a dead end when they married, as my uncle said she had never married, I'll keep plodding on - I think she was probably still around Shropshire as he said my gran had a letter from a solicitor in Birmingham

Any idea of area, ie. which part of the river?
This might help to narrow the search.

From Wiki
An idea of towns, for those, like me, not familiar with the area.........

The source of the Avon is near the village of Naseby in Northamptonshire. For the first few miles of its length between Welford and the Dow Bridge on Watling Street, it forms the border between Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. On this section, it has been dammed to create Stanford Reservoir. It then flows in a generally west-southwesterly direction, not far north of the Cotswold Edge and through the Vale of Evesham, passing through the towns and villages of Welford, Rugby, Wolston, (bordering Leamington Spa), Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Welford-on-Avon, Bidford-on-Avon, Evesham and Pershore, before it joins the River Severn at Tewkesbury.

Thanks Ann, I appreciate the "diggin", I am inclined to think she was more likely to be on the Austin side rather than the Brooks side

Gwyn you have me stumped to I don't know the geography, I would assume between Wellington in Shropshire and Tewkesbury if it runs that route, my uncle said the Avon it could even have been the severn if he hasnt got his facts right, thats the problem, its just a mystery

Elaine

Thanks for all the help
I think I need to try and contact solicitors in Birmingham as apparently my gran had a letter from someone hopefully they may keep records as far back as the 1920s

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 17 May 2012 23:18

Jinny could have been short for all sorts of names, and even middle names, and could have been Ginnie, short for Georgina. If she committed suicide this is likely recorded by local history groups. Here is the link for Tewkesbury History Society, who might be able to help you

http://www.ths.freeuk.com/

Did she die unmarried?

Bit shakey on geography, but pretty sure the Avon doesn´t run through Shropshire. Think thats the Severn.
