hi everyone,
just wondering if anyone can help me im hitting a brick wall, my grandads mother kathleen garland went to live with a family (edward kemp & ellen kemp), they didnt legally adopt her but she married under the kemp surname....her birth mother was called emily garland....i can only find edward & his wife ellen & their "visitor" kathleen garland on the 1911 census but cannot find edward & ellen anytime before that & kathleens mother emily garland completely baffles me as theres quite a few....greenwich, croydon & deptford are the areas im looking for:

kathleen rose garland was born in 1907 (ive got birth cert)
edward kemp gave away kathleen rose at her wedding in 1927 (ive got wedding cert) after that im stuck xxxxxxxxxxxx

Scratch that! By co-incidence Rhoda's middle name is Ellen, but a different couple. But having said that, they are the same age as 1901! Same address though so def. them:

1911 England Census

Name: Edward Kemp
Age in 1911: 45
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1866
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Male
Birth Place: Brookland, Kent, England
Civil parish: Hanwell
County/Island: Middlesex
Country: England
Street Address: 42 Grosvenor Road, Hanwell W
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Shop Assistant Provision
Registration district: Brentford
Registration District Number: 128
Sub-registration district: Hanwell

Edward Kemp 45
Rhoda Ellen Kemp 39
Frances M Kemp 10
Maud Winifred Kemp 8
Edward Henry Kemp 6
Alice Rose Kemp 3
Kathleen Ellen Kemp 1

I wonder if they are connected somehow though? There seem to be a few common names cropping up, same sort of area ans similar occupation for the 2 Edwards - in fact the same 1901 for this one and your Edward 1911.

I don't want to wander off on too much of a tangent, but searching for Ellen this one matches totally in 1901 - except for husband! Is there something 'interesting' going on in this family? Or am I just looking for a mystery!

this family is so complicated, ive got all the censuses but cannot make the connection: right will start from scratch here goes......my great nan (kathleen rose garland) is in the 1911 census as a visitor of edward kemp (1861 approx birth), ellen kemp (wife, 1872 approx birth), frederick kemp (nephew, 1892, approx birth) & kathleen rose garland, living in deptford, greenwich. theres quite a few edward kemps & yes ive found the wife rhoda aswell just not sure if this is who im looking for....edward ended up adopting kathleen (unofficially) & raising her as his own, he was alive in 1929 when kathleen got married (she married under the surname of kemp) & hes on her wedding cert as her father, im just stuck finding a paper trail after the 1911 census as kathleen was only 4yr old in 1911.....grrrrrrrr ist so annoying as we want to know how the kemps came to unofficially adopt kathleen & wat his connection to her birth mother emily garland was.....edward was rumoured in the family to have owned several houses but cant find no evidence of this its now startin 2 get on my nerves haha xx

oh & it was reported within the family that emily garland was a servant that had an affair with her master & got pregnant (not sure how true this is) xx

Have you considered this one? She is living at Crooke Rd. This still exists, and looking at google map, it is just 1.7 miles from Brookmill Rd. Lewisham - not sure of London districts, but it isn't too far away.

yeh i have a copy of that aswell & it was the one i was drawn to the most, its just so confusing as edward kemp never formally adopted emilys daughter kathleen, i phoned the adoption agency & theres no record of her adoption, might just have to follow that trail & see what i come up with, would help if i got emilys birth cert.............thank you so much for your help i appreciate it lots xx

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 14 May 2012 23:20

Adoption wasn't formalised till about 1927 - there would be no record anyway.
