Looks like the 1920 parents listing was wrong and should have stated Scotland for their birth place

Could William and Ann have been married in Scotland? Have you checked to see if they are listed on Scotlandspeople?

Since we (so far) haven't found an earlier record than the 1891 Canadian census that Gins found, it's difficult to know where Ann was born

Edit - image of 1891 says John is married, and that the children's parents were both born in 'Ireland' ie John and the missing spouse
