How very sad Carolyn, we don't realise how lucky most of us are nowadays until we see what many of our ancestors suffered !

I am still looking around but have not come up with anything new yet.

Judging by what happened to Alice, I suspect a similar fate befell Ellen.

I do think that 'George' is the key to unravelling Sarah's past but I can't seem to pin them down anywhere :-(

I will keep at it.......

Carolyn Report 4 May 2012 22:38

Alice sailed on 'Pleione' from London[?] 22 August 1880 arrived in New Zealand 28 November 1880. She was referred to as a Vogel assisted immigrant and her nominee was listed as George Gilbert [on the form as her 'uncle' but family info says he wasn't related] occupation Painter/Decorator of Greytown, New Zealand [he and his wife originally from Birmingham] and Sarah Nottingham -address 402 Nechells Park Rd, Nechells Green, Birmingham -was listed also as 'mother'.
Alice had a horrible time once she arrived in N.Z - she was taken by horse back over the mountains to a small forest settlement miles from anywhere - Kumeroa- of Scandinavian emigrants who were felling trees in the 40 Mile Bush area and had to share a bed with the 4 children of her 'uncle' and 'aunty' Gilbert. They 'arranged' for her to marry one of the Scandinavian forest workers [Thorkel Hansen] who was a friend of theirs - money was exchanged- and this all happened within 6 months of her arrival. It was not a happy marriage -after 12 years and 5 children she eventually left her husband who was in prison at the time for 'spousal battery and unable to provide for the family/debts etc] -the older three children were farmed out to work for their living & the younger children were put into residential care.
Family history says another sister [Ellen?] was also forced to marry but whether in NZ or England I have no knowledge. :-(

Carolyn,

What other information does it show on Alice's immigration form please?
Do you know which part of NZ she settled in?

Do you know what became of Alice's sister Ellen? - Do you think she may also have been sent over there?

Do you know anything of Alice's life in NZ? Who did she marry etc?

OOOps - I meant to say also Carolyn that you have marked a tick on my post above which I presume you meant to show that you had answered it.

This is a 'silly' system used by the site as what this actually means is that you have now marked your whole thread as 'answered' so people will think that you have your info and do not need any further help so will not look at your query.

Can you please go back and 'untick' my message so that people will know that more help is required.

Hi Carolyn,

I thought you had the census's showing George William (known as William) and Sarah's children but it looks like you may not so I will post them below.

A little back story in regard Sarah Ann Nottingham nee Mills - she may have had a daughter or two.
My great grandmother Alice Nottingham was sent to New Zealand at age 16 and the name of her mother on the immigration form is Sarah Nottingham nee Mills.
I wonder why a mother would send her 16 year old daughter to the other side of the world on her own? The names of Alice's children when she married - following family tradition?? - were William, Mary, Thomas, Alice & Sarah Ann & Ellen.
I can add so little general information to help this thread but I would really like to know more about Sarah - her parents, brothers & sisters. Her children also - was she the mother of my great grandmother ??

Thank you very much Dea, Catherine, Prickly Holly, Janet-
I am thrilled and astounded at the information you have found.
I find it difficult researching without help from kind people such as yourselves.
I am wondering in the Census that states George Mills as 'uncle' whether he was Sarah's fathers brother?? Just a random thought....
And in the 1881 Census if he was listed as 'brother in law' then he would be 'brother in law' to head of the household William Nottingham and Sarah's brother -but as you say there is quite a gap between her and her brother in age - ooh it is too confusing!
Very excited to see marriage #2 -Sarah seems to be in the habit of outliving her husbands, doesn't she.
I wonder whether she had children by her marriage to William?
:-)

I also 'think' that Sarah may have married again?

I found this marriage and, following it onto the 1901, she could have married either of them?

He is down as "Brother in Law" on the 1881.

Quite a big age gap between him and Sarah though.

Janet

Janet Report 2 May 2012 10:42

I think the census said that he was 'uncle' instead of brother in law so put a bit of doubt as to his relationship to Sarah-jl

Dea

Dea Report 2 May 2012 10:25

OOOhhhhh - I have found a clue!

Later census show that Sarah had a brother called George born in either 1854 or 1857 (according to whichever census) he later worked as a brass worker or tin plate worker? Born in Aston, Warwickshire.

There are a few to choose from on 1851 but none who fit exactly with the date so I really think that the marriage cert is needed here, otherwise we could be following the wrong one!

My bet is on the one born 1837 who is working as a servant in Aston but there is no way to be sure of this without following her back and we would certainly need the father's name.

The witnesses on the cert might also help to confirm the facts.
