Bartholomew, Dinah

Pauline Report 1 May 2012 20:35

I am trying to find the birth and marriage of my half-cousin, Dinah Bartholomew. I have the births of all her siblings, (9). but Dinah was one of the only two I actually remember visiting. Her husband was called Ted (Edward?) and they lived in Warrior Road, Camberwell.

Her parents also lived in Warrior Road. as did another half aunt and her family. It seems very strange to me that I have found all the others but not Dinah. I have looked for variations of the name but without any luck. Her siblings were born between 1904 and 1925 , and there is a five year gap between Dora (Dorothy) 1920, and Irene, 1925, who married Henry Gilbert.

If anyone is able to help me I should be very grateful. I feel as if I'm going round in circles :-S

Thank you
Pauline Denmark nee Clarke

Hello Pauline, where have you been looking for birth records.

Is Dinah still alive?

Have you found her marriage record? If so, what did it give as her surname?

It looks as though the parents of the elusive Dinah were Harry Bartholomew and Minnie Mary E Greenslade

In 1911 they have children
Rosie aged 7
Harry aged 2
Alfred aged 1
And a widowed lodger named Emma Dalton aged 69
All living in Warrior Road, Camberwell

Yes, I do see that Pauline's looking for the marriage record.

What I should have asked was if she knew what Dinah's married name was. That might then help track back.

Thank you everyone who has tried to help. Unfortunately, I don't remember, or maybe never knew the surname of Dinah's husband. I just know he was called Ted, which I presume would be Edward/edwin though I guess it could also have been Theodore. Perhaps Dinah wasn't her name at all - she had a brother called Harry, and he was always known as Abbie! I am in contact with another cousin who is now 90, and she is trying to help me.

If anyone can think of an alternative to Dinah (I have tried Dina, Diana, Diane) I'll have another go!

Happy Hunting everyone

Just putting in this info in case it rings a bell:
In 1945 at 44 Warrior Rd living with Harry and Minnie are Dora M and Gladys A (Bartholomew).

By 1948 at same address with Harry and Minnie are Dora M and Douglas W White and Edward H and Gladys A Gravestock. The Gravestocks are there with Minnie up until at least 1961.

I think this is them:
Marriages Sep 1947 (>99%)
Bartholomew Amelia G Gravestock Camberwell 5c 620
Gravestock Herbert E S Bartholomew Camberwell 5c 620

Thank you for these additional details. When I visited they weren't elderly - at a guess I would say late 20s/early 30s, but at my age everyone seemed old! Amelia was another of Harry and Minnie Mary's children, and she was married to Herbert Gravestock. It does seem quite possible that Gladys A was the one I knew as Dinah, so I will pursue that one for now. I don't think that any of our family, close or extended, lived in Hackney, so though I am tempted by the name Josephine (one of my sisters is called Josephine) I think it may be a red herring. Warrior Road is the right location - Auntie Min & Uncle Harry, Dinah & Ted and Aunt Francis & Uncle Bill and their family - all lived in Warrior Road. So, back into the fray to check out Gladys!

Thanks again all of you, for your help.

Theres no birth for a Gladys A so could she be in fact Amelia Gladys ?? and her hubby was Herbert Edward but known as Edward.

not unusual for people to be known by their second names

She may not have liked either name so was known as Dinah

Wow, you must all be burning up the information highway! Yes, Gladys is/was Amelia as well, properly Amelia Gladys but who knows what she answered to and yes, her husband was Edward Herbert Gravestock, but not the Ted I'm looking for. Our maternal grandmother had a sister Amelia, so that is where the name came from, but Dinah was married to a Ted. I've also tried the Josephines and also Alice, which was the name of my mother's sister, born in 1900 and died in 1901 - my Mother was born in 1905 (and they were Mountcastles!) SO I'm still stuck on Dinah alias ?.

None of this really surprises me, as they were nearly all called by names other than the ones they were given at birth! Harry known as Abbie, Irene as Rene, Dorothy as Dora and Frances as Fran. No wonder they drive us round the bend looking for them.........

However, none of that detracts from the kindness you have shown me in trying to help. I think Dinah may well have to go on the back burner for now, whilst I pursue other elusive relatives.

With thanks again to all,
Pauline
