'Orphan' means that both parents have died. That is simply the definition of the word - it does not necessarily mean that she was placed in an orphanage

Mabel Kathleen Firth is the name by which she knew herself - and could be from any source.

Legal adoption didn't come into force until the mid-1920's, so any arrangement prior to that would have been informal

Who witnessed her marriage?

Hi Helpers,
I am searching Mabel Kathleen Firth b c1912 d1976.
Her daughter (still alive) knows nothing of where her mother Mabel was born or lived.
Mabel was an orphan, her words to her daughter.
She married (age 28) Charles Hadlow 1940 Camberwell/Peckham (have cert.) and it shows no father on it, they lived remainder of life in Newington area.
The only Mabel Kathleen I can find is on 1911 census Dewsbury b1908 but she married J Kemp 1933 so is wrong.
My questions are=
Where do I go from here.
Do I assume her parents died making her an orphan.
Do I assume Firth was her surname or maybe an adopted name, was it her unknown fathers name or mothers name.
Where would I find orphanages records.
There are a number of Mabel Firth (minus Kathleen) similar birth years but where do I start.
Genealogy has been my hobby for many years and can't give up on this one so please help if you can.
Kind Regards
Les.
