It seems to me the other woman was probably Irene Fairbrother and the 2 children were probably David and Katherine. Where did you gain your info re mystery woman and children ?

According to the census his father was Arthur Pike (mother Clara).

I agree the next step will be looking at divorce records to try and find out if he was divorced around 1957. Alternatively I could look through marriages of Arthur Pike in the 1920s and 30`s?

I think you should get the marriage cert to see who his father is. Also, look for divorce records:

I am not even sure if they were married (first wife) however this could explain why it took so long for him to marry his second wife.

yes 1899 was his actual birth I believe...the census must be off by a year.

With David and Katherine being born in the 1940s, the marriage must be before this. His first wife must have died/divorced by 1957.

According to the 1911 Census Arthur James Pike was born in approx 1900 in Bromley Lambeth.

They had two children Katherine and David.
