Find Ancestors

Hi,

My g/grandfather Aaron Barran doesn't seem to be on the 1911 census so perhaps a new pair of eyes might find him.

Aaron b. March 1853 in Stanningley, Leeds, Yorks. wife Eliza b. 1856 in Stanningley.

Lived most of his life in Stanningley and was there in 1901 at 2 Vickers Terrace. He died and was buried in Stanningley in 1926.

I have all other details and census records for Aaron but not 1911.

His eldest son John Barber Barran b.June 1875 in Pudsey also appears to be missing from the 1911 census.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, again you've got the correct family. I did try what I thought were all the variations of the names but didn't think to alter the 'Barber' name.

Not all districts have been transcribed on t'other site. You can go the long way round if you know the reference..you need districts ED and SN

So for Aaron's

Registration District: Bramley Sub District: Bramley Enumeration District: 10 Parish: Armley and Bramley

Go to search census, 1911 England and then browse the collection...

county = Yorks west riding
civil parish Armley & Bramley
Sub District Bramley
ED10

Then double the schedule number - so 468, enter this into "image" and hey presto!

Hi Jude,

Thanks to your instructions I have now found both census records on Ancestry.
It's a pity they haven't yet got their fingers out and transcribed the whole lot into easy searchable form, membership costs enough and they spend a fortune on advertising.
Thanks again to you 'patchem' for your details and 'Jude' for your very precise information on how to view the records, I'm sure that will help other GR members also. My appreciation to you both.

It doesn't always work...sometimes (frustratingly for me) the EDs are missing!! And sometimes you have to search when doubling the SNs. But a lot of people can help you out with the refs on here :-)

Ha ha Dea! It needs someone with a subscription either here or FMP to be able to give the ref so you can work it out on A :-)

I'll bear your further comments in mind Jude re the doubling of the figure on Ancestry.

Dea, although not a paying member of FMP I do buy credits from time to time and I thought I had checked their records before posting on GR. obviously I can't have been very thorough :-(

a*ron ba*er or bar* should have found them

john bar* 1876 +/- 2 years, yorkshire, is all I would have started with


often the problem with ancestry is just plain and simple, putting in too much information!

Tried your suggestion but on these two people no results were forthcoming using the wild card on Ancestry.

Hello all - like Arnie said...I'm back...had switched of my automatic renew and so yesterday morning tried to reply (to this thread) and I couldn't....and then it was time for work and then I forgot last night (age thing!!!)

Anyway...Ian...the reason for doubling the schedule number is that there are two pages per household; a front summary page and then the detail

Sylvia...agree that sometimes the devil is in the detail! But there are vast areas that are not yet fully transcribed and so the search doesn't work. Unfortunately for me it seems someone has pointed a great big imaginary finger and said....pick out all her areas. Newport, where my direct family settled in late 1890s isn't fully transcribed (and worse still there are still many EDs missing altogether) Worcestershire's another...and that's where half of them came from before they moved to Newport and the other half came from Wolverhampton...and guess what?

A girl could get a persecution complex :-)
