The medals incidentally are The 1914/5 Star, The British and The Victory, known colloquially as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.

Thank you for your speedy replies You have all the correct information John James born in 1915 is the child that died at 2 years old when Grandad was in France My Mum was born much later in 1922 He always worked on the Railways until he retired Thanks again Pam

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 22 Mar 2012 15:43

He enrolled on 1/2/1915. His occupation at the time was a platelayer. It states that he was married to Fanny Short who he had married on 31/8/1912 in Coseley. He had 2 sons, Samuel Henry born 29/9/1912 (That was close) and John James born 6/3/1915.

He gave his next of kin as his wife living at 3 Darlshouse lane, Deepfields?

He embarked for France on 14/4/1915.

Sadly a copy of his son John James's death certificate is amongst his records. He died on 8/7/1917 of Broncho Pneumonia and Cardiac failure. His father was reimbursed 2s 7d, the cost of providing a copy of the certificate to the army.

Well done Jonesey.

Pamela,

There is the Wartimes Memory Project which covers both World Wars. Google this and then go to World War 1 - you can contact them and I am sure that you will have plenty of help. You may wish to add any story you have using the name and the response is fantastic - just like the genes helpers.

Good luck,

Maria

The actual medals should have his service # engraved on the edge.

Did he have 2 or 3 medals? That is significant as the Star medal was awarded to those involved in the conflict in 1914/15 but not usually to those who only became involved later. If you have the medals is his name and a service number inscribed on the rim?

If only 2 medals this might be his medal index card:
Name: John J Millington
Regiment or Corps: Army Service Corps
Regimental Number: DM2/129546

If 3 medals then this one is a possibility:
Name: John J Millington
Regiment or Corps: Royal Engineers
Regimental Number: 36689

1911 just for placement:

The actual medals should have his regimental number on the rim, so knowing that will make it easier to search!

You could try searching records held by the National Archives in Kew. I know ancestry also have a WW1 section, so this may be worth looking at aswell - don't get your hopes up though as a large proportion of WW1 records were later destroyed in the bombings of WW2. Good luck with your searching
