That would confirm his mother being Margaret as in the 1861 census. Thanks

iS THIS HIM quote from above link
That was Jackson the cricketer. Jackson the man was born in Bungay in May 1833, but when a week old he and his mother moved the the Rufford estate of Lord Savile south of Ollerton in Nottinghamshire. Rumour had it that Jackson was the son of a lord and a gipsy. As a child he ran wild - he was illiterate all his life - and even in 1866 he signed his son’s birth certificate with a X.

Yes it is quite confusing. I found info on cricinfo.com which has the same 1833 date which is why I started having doubts as to the correct birth and parents. I guess I will need those certs. Thank you

"Hi MarieCeleste, Thank you that does confirm the 1881 census is correct but conflicts with the other info regarding his birth in Bungay Suffolk in 1833"...don't believe everything you read on Wikipaedia.....they had my grandad as Llewellyn "Llew" Llewellyn...I contacted the Wales Rugby League with my grandad's details and it seems that L.J. had become Llewellyn "Llew". Half an hour later it was correct....

You didn't mention Bungay but I see that it's in the articles linked. Articles on Wikipedia may be user submitted so there is no guarantee of accuracy, if you want to be really sure then you need to get that marriage certificate.

I note you mention mother possibly being Elizabeth and those two baptisms give that. However, on 2 of the census his mother appears to be Margaret.

Hi MarieCeleste, Thank you that does confirm the 1881 census is correct but conflicts with the other info regarding his birth in Bungay Suffolk in 1833.

On the original of the 1881 it looks like the wife's name WAS entered as Mahala originally and then amended (perhaps by the enumerator) to the perhaps better known name of Matilda:

JACKSON, John Head Married M 45 1836 Professional Cricketer Nottingham Nottinghamshire
JACKSON, Matilda Wife Married F 43 1838 Lincoln Lincolnshire
JACKSON, John Son Single M 19 1862 Dock Labourer Retford Nottinghamshire
JACKSON, Kate Daughter Single F 16 1865 Shop Assistant Retford Nottinghamshire
JACKSON, Henry Son Single M 15 1866 Milkboy (Seller) Retford Nottinghamshire
JACKSON, Samuel Son Single M 11 1870 Scholar Lpool Lancashire
JACKSON, Lucy Daughter Single F 7 1874 Scholar Lpool Lancashire

Registration District: Toxteth Park
Civil Parish: Toxteth Park

Address: 23, Carlton Hill, Toxteth Park County: Lancashire

There will always be inconsistencies of a few years on ages, but otherwise the children match up well. Liza from the 1871 would be an adult and probably left home. John and Kate are on both. Harry from 1871 is Henry in 1881. The Sara 5 mo on 1871 is completely wrong, the original shows it as Sam'l - son, who is there on the 1881

Hi GlitterBaby I don't have the marriage cert. I do know they are in Liverpool in 1881 - some of the children are different in the 1871 census. It gives me a different mothers name and does confuse the date of birth and place. At least I can work on that. Thanks for your help

Hi all, I have John Jackson [professionbal cricketer] on 1881 census as born in 1836 in Nottingham. Newspaper articles have his birthday as May 1833. I originally found a birth/christening ref [Nov 1836] on the IGI pilot scheme with parents John and Elizabeth[Smith]. Now I cannot find that ref. or any for either the 1833 birth or the 1836 one. He married a Mahala Reavil in 1857 in Spalding. He died in Liverpool workhouse in 1901.
Can any help confirm parents and birthdate? Any help would be most appreciated - thanks.
