Three Skipwith names in NZ Telecom White Pages. Two in Rotorua and one in Auckland.

It is unusual spelling, but just check those first and you may get lucky.

it could all come down to a matter of accents!


I tried imagining how an upper class Englishman might say "Skipwith" .......... if you hold your head back and speak from the back of your throat, chin tucked in, and nasally ............ it sounds very much like Skipworth :-D

Magdalen Hall at Oxford is NOT a residence ....... it is a college. It is now known as Hertford College.


You don't actually attend Oxford University, you are at one of the more than 40 self-governing Colleges and Halls which form the university. One is more likely to say "I was at Magdalen", than "I was at Oxford".

The same applies at Cambridge

The mystery to me was his arrival etc in NZ ... if surname used on official documents in NZ was 'Skipworth' but his name was actually 'Skipwith' as used in newspaper articles - and by his daughters when they married, then problem solved - hopefully.

What we do in the interests of accuracy in genealogy !!!!!

I gather that means attended Oxford University ... resided Magdalen Hall ... matric at 18 yrs ..... died 1855

That fits .... I feel it's the same person ... but after emigrating England to NZ his surname on records is spelt 'Skipworth' (Passenger list, Marriage 1854/1103, Death 1855/249) instead of Skipwith.

Newspaper article for his 1854 marriage used "skipwith"

His two daughters from first 'marriage' used surname of 'Skipwith' (1878/992 and 1880/2279) in NZ

I have him from 1843 on ... including marriage to Emily Symons in 1854. This in fact was his second 'marriage' ... first was to a Maori 'princess'.
I note the spelling of the surname .... but newspaper notice on marriage to Emily Symons spelt it as 'Skipwith'

Intriguing .... maybe he was a 'remittance man' banished to the colonies ... spelling of surname mispelt deliberately at the time to avoid family embarasment

(Note spelling of his surname).

Brian...I would think that the probability of someone with the same Christian names approx same age arriving at the same place and same time frame as you are looking is rather low...Skipworth/Skipwith... I would assume its the same person unless you have evidence to the contrary...
Have you followed him after his arrival in Wellington....?

I have seen the Skipworth entry on the Prince of Wales in 1942-3 - and it is a possibility ... although the surname I'm looking for is Skipwith, and there is a thought that he possibly arrived NZ very, very late 1830's.

Maybe the 1842-3 arrival is correct but with a spelling or transcription 'error'

I have the Francis Robert Estoteville Skipwith christening for 1920 ... parents are correct

Emigration records start at 1890 on FMP. Maybe you would have more luck tracing him inwards on New Zealand records
