Hi guys,

Once again a big thank you to all those who helped answer threads posted by people visiting us at WDYTYALive this weekend. As promised, we are now busy identifying all those who helped and will be extending your membership by 1 month.

We also wanted to thank you for all of your suggestions and feedback and for all of the help you offer to other members every day, not just this weekend. We hope that this weekend we have shown some new members the amazing work you do and will have encouraged them to participate in conversations on the boards.

I realise that it was not meant as such and was a gesture of your appreciation.

However, I really feel that your offer of 1 month's extra membership which is worth about 60p to me is quite insulting.

I do not need a gift of 60p - a sincere 'thank you', on it's own, would have been much better received.

I don't want to put a 'negative spin' on this as I am sure that it was kindly meant, BUT, I think the site needs to work on it's 'P.R.' skills.

Best wishes to all the 'team' and I am pleased that the weekend was a success.

I am perfectly happy if I do get a month extra ( which is worth more than 60p in my case). I don't 'expect' it and would have helped anyway, but I'm glad the weekend was a success and was just pleased to be able to find at least one piece of info that might have helped someone move forward ( or back lol).

Well done to the helpers who put in time and effort...as they always do.

My day on site usually begins well after most of you guys have gone home or are in bed :-D

So at least one person returned but posted in the wrong place...Oh well at least they returned

and I've just had a pm from another person from the WDYTYA postings, thrilled with something I suggested he might try.

Hi Joy - if the post has been made using the WDYTYA Live log in then we aren't able to contact the person we posted for. This is because we don't have their log in details. We did tell everyone how to check for responses though once they got home.
It is lovely to hear that some of you have been receiving PMs from people you have helped.
I was posting for Anne Upton and she'd never used the message boards before despite being a member of Genes for a while. She was amazed at how quick and helpful the responses were. In the time we were chatting at the show she had already received several replies.
On a personal note, Lady Kira stopped by to say hello and it was really lovely to meet her. We ended up chatting for ages :-)

Thank you and GR for showing your appreciation of those GR members who help others via the message boards.

In some respects the increased activity created by WDYTYALive at the weekend reminded me of the situation 2/3 years ago when, prior to the message board reorganisation, the boards were much busier. It was then that I first began to try to help those who posted their queries/requests on the boards. It was a two way exercise because by helping others I was, at the same time, honing my own research skills.

From my point of view its message boards are GR's greatest asset. Even by just reading them GR members can learn a great deal about how to approach their research by discovering how others with similar situations to their own have resolved matters. Although the GR site gives access to some records they obviously do not cover everything or every situation. Through the message boards GR members can often find links to other sites that might just be able to provide the key to unlock the door or the hammer to knock down the brick wall. A great deal of the genealogy knowledge that I now possess was gained through reading other peoples messages.

Another thought - perhaps Genes Reunited staff could at least post an acknowledgement using the WDYTYA Live login?

I did not get chance to help out over the weekend. But comments...The GR boards are invaluable for help. I have solved several family problems with help from the members on the boards. However, I feel that many many members do not use GR as their main source of information - I certainly don't. And yet any mention of "other" sources in one's help are censured with - tbh - offensive censorious warnings. My membership is up for renewal end of this month....I have considered seriously whether I want to continue or not such has been the attitude nof GR. I have also considered seriously renewing and being a taker rather than a giver such has been the attitude of GR..... :-|
