Can anyone help with this family. Am finding 2 seperate marriages for Sarah Mary Ann/e Caroline Maidmen (1) 1850 East London (2) 1861 Shoreditch. Both have the choice of bridegroom including James Miller,.who she did marry. On daughter Matildas' birth cert 22 may 1864 nelsons fields, merton, father is stated as James Miller, labourer at copper mill, mother Sarah Mary Ann Caroline Maidmen. On Matildas marriage to Richard Stanley 1884. states father James, occup. printer. witness Charles and Sarah Ann /Eves(nee miller and Matildas sister) no birth found. There is also a sister Harriet Ann(no birth cert found)= Charles John Hall 1871, father James Miller printer and another sister Rosina(no birth cert found) visiting Sarah Ann Eves, down as sister. Cannot find this family as a group on any census and mostly cannot find births for the daughters except Matilda, I would have thought there would be sons as well, but cannot find any. I have found James Miller on the 1841 born 1827, living with his family at Nelsons Fields, merton(so named after Lord Nelson bought an estate there) and where there was a copper rolling mill. Any help with these 2 different marriage dates and whether the bride and grooms fathers were the same on both marriage dates!

Do I understand this correctly that the party or parties did not turn up and the marriage did not take place in 1850. Does this mean that James Miller did then mary Sarah Mary Ann Maidmen in 1861 or that they married other people at that time.

Hi Mike, yes looked under Millar and Millor and Mellor. Unable to find any births/bapt for 3 of 4 daughters with father as James and mother Sarah, and no where can I find them on census returns as a family.

It maybe possible that they never registered their children as they were not married until 1861....

Hi Jules, thanks for your imput. It seems really strange to me that they wouldn't turn up in 1850 but then married 11 years later in 1861. I take your point they may not have registered children pre 1861, still not on any census that I can find though!

Sorry Mike, as far as I can ascertain Sarah Ann was born 1857/8, Rosina 1868 Matilda 1864(have birth cert for her) and Harriet Ann 1853. This is as near as I can get.

Chris, thanks for that, this family just keeps getting more and more surprising. Sarah was calling herself Miller even though they didn't get married in 1850, waited 11 years then got married.!!!!

I don't think we ever did come to grips with this family but it wasn't for lack of trying!!!

That extracted record on familysearch is a mistake ........

............... the certificate in the Parish Register on ancestry is quite clearly crossed out, and "This party did not come" written on it

Suspect the reason they didn't get married on the 24th November 1850 was the fact that she had James Robert William Miller on the 25th November 1850 - she probably went into labour and couldn't turn up to get married!

OMG,Choccy!!! Totally missed that! That is hysterical. So she waited another 11 years before trying that marriage thing again? ;-)
