My mother's paternal grandfather, Edwin Freeman, was born 27 Jan 1839 in 21 Goswell St. St Luke, Middx.

He married Anne Little 04 Aug 1861 and had 11 children, my great grandfather, Joseph William Freeman was the eighth child.

I cannot find a death record for Edwin. I believe he died in London as all the family appear to have been based in London.

I have found him on the 1891 Census with his wife.

Can anyone suggest how I might find details of his death.

Have you found his wife as a widow in the 1901 census?

I can't see Edwin, Annie or the two youngest children in 1901. I see Reuben living as a boarder.

I wonder if the family either missed the 1901 or are mistranscribed?

I should have added that I cannot find the death of his wife either.

What could you mistranscribe Freeman as? My mother's maternal line was Dickson and this is easily mistranscribed as Dixon - and was!

On the original Annie's father says Edward Freeman with the Edward scored out and Edwin inserted. He is not stated as deceased but the groom's father is. Edwin's occupation is a Licensed Victuller. On of the witnesses is Edwin Freeman.

Annie's address is 39 Hemingford Road and no occupation is given for her.

He is not marked as deceased on this marriage either but his occupation is given as Packer

My grandmother Fanny Dickson married Joseph William Freeman on 15 Dec 1907 - here Joseph's father is given as Edward Samuel Freeman deceased.

Edwin's father was Samuel.

You are now beginning to see my difficulty in tracing Edwin Freeman's death.
It is interestting that his name appeared on more than one marriage certificate as Edward, crossed out on one and Edwin entered.

Also intersting that he is shown as deceased at least twice before being shown as alive (or not marked deceased) on several more of his children;s marriages.

It would probably have been helpful if you'd given that 1907 info in the first place.

Sorry -but I am not perfect like some people.

If I had remembered the info then I would not have received the reply from Rootgatherer that indicates him still being alive after 1907. :-|

On the 1901 census Edwin, the son uses his middle intitials. The marriages I looked at where an Edwin was a witness, it was only on Reuben's marriage that the signature gave the full name. The others were just Edwin Freeman.

Sorry, I have to go out now so I am not able to go back and look again to compare the signatures to see if the marriages in the 1890s may have been his father.
