Violet Greta Heads adopted 1911

"Adoptions" certainly did occur in 1911 and probably always have. However it was only in 1927 that they were formalised through the courts. Prior to that they were informal so very unlikely that any records would have been made unless perhaps the "Adoption" had been arranged through a religious organisation who may have kept their own records.

Jan Ann Head, Mother registered Violet's birth.

Some interesting thoughts.

Dies anyone know how did adoptions occur in 1911?

Seems the Ritchies and Gibbles both worked as gardeners at Wynyard Park.
Google it,what a beautiful place to be.

Another coincidence - or am I just trying to make things fit?
Now looked at the 1911 census for the family that Shirley mentioned above, where there is a Jane Ann Ritchie aged 38. As she says the head of household is

Henry Edds Gribble - gardener.

Henry Edds - sounds like Henry Heads and occupation is similar.

I have an ancestor whose name on her marriage certificate is incorrect and only sounds similar to her her real surname - other family members researching her believe that the registrar was either very hard of hearing or not very good at his job! Alternatively Jane Ann Ritchie may just wanting to give a name for the father that was similar to the truth? I also have an ancestor who (it seems) had a child to the much older head of household where she was a servant.

John Walton born @ 1862 Thirsk North Yorkshire a Tailor/journeyman on 1901 census in halifax.

He married in Halifax J/A/S 1896 in Halifax to Charlotte Le Dieu.
She was born Brixton 1867 to Thomas F Dieu born london 1839 and Susan.

The name for 50,Mowbray St is Brewis not Brewin, tanscription error.

Johnson Brewis married Mary Ann nee Urwin.

Just done a shearch for fruit growers in Northumberland in 1911 census and only 3 appear - one of who is William Walton (wife Amelia).

It struck me that it is a coincidence that Violet's birth father is named as a fruit grower on the birth certificate and that the people who adopted her have the surname Walton (like the fruit growers I found). I wonder if there is a connection somewhere along the line? Not sure that this helps though :-|

Giving a maiden name on a birth cert must not be taken as proof that a marriage occurred.

Who registered the birth?

What is the exact wording on the cert?

Kerry

Kerry Report 10 Feb 2012 12:28

On Violet's birth cert, mother is listed as Jane Ann Heads (Ritchie)

Father's occupation listed as Fruit Grower (Master) sorry, not Gardener

????

Jane Ann Ritchie
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1877
Registration district: Newcastle upon Tyne
Inferred County: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear
Volume: 10b
Page: 148

It would make her c33 when Violet was born.

Could you check that on the BC, that Jane Ann is named as 'formerly Ritchie' which would imply they were married or at least pretending to be.

Kerry Report 10 Feb 2012 11:42

Violet was born 24 Jan 1911, 50 Mowbray Street, Newcastle, England, parents Henry Heads and Jane Ann Ritchie. Father's occupation Gardener. Violet Head is listed as adopted on the 1911 census (9 weeks old) at 57 Sandyford Road, Newcastle on Tyne, England with John and Charlotte Walton.

John, Charlotte and Violet immigrated to Sydney Aust, arriving 13 Nov 1911 on the ship Norseman.

Trying to find Violet's birth parents, all I can find is Violet's birth cert.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
