Lynne

The best way to find out what is shown on the GRO index is to look at freebmd

Never believe the dob on the death certificate! My mother registered her mother's death and gave date of birth as 4th September 1889...I have the birth certificate and it was a year earlier in 1888, a fact borne out by the marriage certificate. But as Chris says, the maiden name should be on the certificate but again it is only as good as the informant. Good luck!

Maiden names are shown on death certificates from 1 April 1969.

So, as long as the informant knew her maiden name, you will be able to confim if you have the right certificate.

Good luck
Chris

If you are saying that the age at death in the indices is incorrect then the same applies....The age would only be as good as what the informant thought they knew.

Who is it that you are looking for, Lynne?

The birthdate on a death record is only as good as the person registering the death knew. Haven't you ever made a mistake on your parents or grandparents year of birth?

Lynne

The birth indices give just the quarter in which a birth was registered so....

March...Birth registered January, February, March
June....April, May. June
September...July, August, September
December....October, November, December

However as there was six weeks allowed to register a birth it is possible that a birth that took place late in one quarter can be registered in the next.

To assertain the actual date of birth you would need to purchase the certificate or find a baptism that may include a date of birth.

After the 1st April 1969 the date of birth is included in the death indices, however the date is only as good as what the informant knew, or thought they knew.

thanks jax ive found a death record which i think is right but the year of birth is wrong so was just wondering if the birth record showed the month not the quater it was registered

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Feb 2012 17:33

It depends what you mean by birth records. The certificate gives you the actual date. What is posted on FreeBMD just gives quarter and year.
Some baptism records have the date of birth written in the margin.

Mostly it is the Quarter registered never the date of birth

My grandmonther was born in November but was not registered until early the following year

Lynne

do birth records give the date of birth or just the month born
