Hello the first time I have used this. I am trying to find a connection with my Thakeham ancestors with the Shipley lot. Here is what I have so far. Edward Etheridge born 1641 in Horsham and died in 1701 in Shipley. He married Jane Hailler in Shipley and so this tree goes on to Shipley and Horsham. My tree which starts at Richard born in 1639 married Ales Parsons in Thakeham. I have information that Richards line so far has turned up Thomas Etheridge born 1573 and his father a Thomas also. Both born in thakeham. Now I feel that the two trees are connected and am seeking anyone who can help solve this problem. I have so much information and the more I look the more names I turn up Please contact me if you can help. I have been searching for a long while. regards elaine.

Hi Elaine

I am getting confused with all these places you are mentioning.

You start off in Sussex then go to Yorkshire and where does Woodgreen come into it?

I know England is small compared with Australia but Sussex to Yorkshire was a fair distance back then...and is Woodgreen in London? that is the only one I know

sorry I am getting a little confused. Shipley and Thakeham I assume are near one another so I have based my search on that. I have since found some information that indeed does put the families together at one stage with the nye family from shipley and the etheridge family from thakeham but later in the tree. I am trying to find the connection at the time around the 1570s. Now the Woodgrene I think that is the correct spelling was thrown in the mix but I have out ruled that as they do not fit in with our tree at all and you are quite correct that is too far away from the shipley area. so please disregard that area and I am sorry to confuse you. thankyou again for answering elaine

Just an example of the confusion caused when counties are not entered. . It is sufficient to say there is a Shipley in Sussex without offering instructions in the imperative or 'shouting' the County. Jax made a reasonable assumption given the information-jl

Thats the trouble, I used to live in W.Sussex only up until a couple of years ago...cannot say I had heard of Shipley so I googled it and it came up as being in Yorkshire

thankyou to all that answered. I am looking at map and Thakeham, Shipley and Horsham all around the same area. This is why I think that the Shipley lot are related somehow to the Thakeham lot of ancestors. Now I need to find the connection. I have dated it back to the 1570s but here is where I am finding my problem. I cannot find the connection because to be frank I do not know where to look. My lot of Etheridges do cross paths later in the tree and they have sibblings that are born and lived in Horsham, making me beleive the connection is correct. Help on where to look in the 1500s. thanks again. elaine :-)

Not saying you were, jax.

My initial reaction was to think of Shipley in Yorks......my closest friend was born there. But I keep a road atlas on my desk, and usually go there first for UK geography

My additional post was for Janet's benefit.............she had to put her spoke in

Elaine..............

Thank you for your lovely PM.................

May I offer a tip.............

Next time you ask for help, please remember to include the county.....place names in the UK often occur more than once

Hello again I have done some more further research and am slowly finding more etheridges every where in sussex. I have found an early couple marrying in 1540 in Lyminster his name was Thomas and I suspect that he had a brother John. John married in Rustington. My new question is does any one know if a person in those times would travel to somewhere like Thakeham or Shipley when they got married? I have traced several Etheridges and their birth years are close with some having the same named fathers however they are not in the same place of birth if that makes any sense. It is very hard to imagine them travelling outside of Sussex but within Sussex would this be possible? Please if any one can assist I would be greatful. elaine
