I think I need a fresh pair of eyes on this one. On the 1881 census there are two girls, Eliza Maria Herdman b1865 Manchester and Ada Herdman b1868 Liverpool listed as nieces of Elizabeth Harper b1814 Newton, Lancashire. I know Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Herdman in Oct 1814 daughter of Edward and Ellen. I found Eliza and Ada in the 1871 census and I think their mother was Martha Rutter married to George and she was born in 1843 in Yorkshire. I don't know who their father was and it is bugging me. I know there are at least 4 sons of Edward and Ellen: John, William, Henry and Richard. But I don't know which one was the father of the girls. And I can't find a marriage of Martha Herdman to George Rutter, if this was a second marriage. If someone can find a father for them I'd be grateful, I keep coming back to it and get stuck.

Thanks
Sam
