I wonder whether anyone can help me find James's parent(s), please?

James was born in 1866 at Mayland (Maldon District), Essex. I found him in Census information living with his grandparents, James and Sarah, in 1871 (when he is incorrectly listed as son) and in 1881 when he is correctly listed as grandson. He is married by 1891.

I have tried to find a baptism for him to see whether he has one or two parents named at the time of baptism but I have been unsuccessful.

I'd appreciate any help as people I've contacted do not have conclusive proof of his parentage and I'd like to enter him onto my family tree correctly.

Thanks, Kath, that's as far as I got so I began searching for a baptism to no avail, I'm afraid.

Can anyone with access to Essex records (Mayland/Maldon) shed any light here, please?

Is it possible that his mother remarried? There is this couple in the Maldon registration district on the 1871 census:-

EVERITT, David Head M 36 1835 Essex
EVERITT, Sarah Wife F 31 1840 Essex
LING, Rhoda Daughter F 6 1865 Essex
EVERITT, Martha Daughter F 2 1869 Essex
EVERITT, Emm J F 0 1871 Essex

Address:
On Tyle Hall Farm, Latchingdon

This is their marriage:-

Year of Registration: 1868
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's last name: Not available before 1912

On the same page is Sarah Ling. Spelling often changes from record to record.

Thanks, Mel.

I got that too. Arthur and Alfred are living with their mother in a later census but James is still with his grandparents and listed as grandson in 1881 so I've found no indication as to who his parent(s) are.

I'm guessing that because his name is Linge he's the son of one of James and Sarah's daughters only because I would think any other mother would have kept her son with her (and/or her parents) and not handed him over to the boy's father's parents.

I could be wrong so I'll keep searching to get the right info.

JoyLouise Report 30 Jan 2012 11:20

Not found that Kathleen.

James's (1866) grandparents, James and Sarah, had a good number of children - a few girls and a few boys (at least two sets of twins among them) - so James could be the son of any one of them I suppose. I'm still banking on his mother being a Linge, though.

I'm carrying on my search before I add James (1866) to my tree.

There are also a couple of deaths of a Charles Ling between 1861 and 1871 in the same registration district.

Could James and Sarah have had a son called Charles?

No, Kath. James married a Louisa English who already had a son, Charles English - he's listed as wife's son on one of the censuses.

James and Louisa don't appear to have had any children of their own who lived.

Chris's find rules out the family that I found.

I think your best bet would be to buy the birth certificate.

Thank you Chris. This appears to be my James Linge. This is the second member of the family I believe to have the name spelled Lynge.

I think Sarah Lynge b 1871 Q3 at Steeple, Essex (again, Maldon District) was my grandfather's sister - the daughter of John and Sarah Linge.

I've searched for my Sarah and found a few but have managed to account for them so if you can help me verify what I believe about Sarah Lynge I'd be grateful.

The spelling of the name could change every time it is written down, depending on who was doing the writing. Most people at that time were illiterate so wouldn't be able to check that the name was spelled correctly.

Essex Ancestors online only has Steeple baptisms to 1853.

However it notes there are Bishops Transcripts of baptisms to 1877 (with many gaps) available at the Essex Record Office.

Thank you for the info.

I think I can get info from the Transcripts.

The Sarah on the 1851 Census is James's twin sister; children of James and Sarah nee Willis). She is the aunt of whom I believe to be my Sarah Linge (Lynge) born 1871.

My own great-grandfather, John Linge had a twin sister, Ann. He married another Sarah whose extended family also had twins!
