Sharon..do we have a birthdate for him??? If he was in Borstal in 1881 then he was a teenager rather than an adult prisoner......

Derek Report 26 Jan 2012 15:01

Have you investigated the possibility that he was not an inmate.and was maybe a Prison Officer??? Rochester Borstal was built in 1870..for juvenile offenders.......not for 38 year olds..........
EDIT.sorry..found him..he WAS an inmate..he appears on the 1851 and 1861 as John Selly..son of George and Sofia............but nowhere on the 1871...........

England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892

Name: John Selby
Date of Trial: 8 Mar 1859
Trial Year: 1859
Location of Trial: Nottinghamshire, England
Sentence: Imprisonment < 4 years

Crime was "Housebreaking, before convicted of felony"

Not sure if this is definitely him. If it is, then he didn't seem to serve the 4 years as he appears to be with his family in 1861:

SELBY, George Head Married M 67 1794 Frame Work Knitter Mansfield Nottinghamshire
SELBY, Sofia Wife Married F 54 1807 Hinksey Leicestershire

I'm sure this 1871 must be connected:

SELBY, Harriett Head F 69 1802 Staffordshire
SELBY, Sophia Daughter F 31 1840 Staffordshire < Doubler
SELBY, Tim Son M 25 1846 Nottinghamshire < Twist Hand
WARD, Kate Grandchild F 12 1859 Yorkshire < Clipper

Registration District: Nottingham
Civil Parish: St Mary
Municipal Borough: Nottingham

Address: Wood Street, St Mary, Nottingham County: Nottinghamshire
