I have a birth cert for Richard born on 23/5/1881 in Easington stating his father was William Hughes - Coal miner and mother was Margaret Hughes formally Hughes. Richard went to marry Martha Straughan.

But I have contacted a GR member who I thought was connected & she claims her Richard is not the same as mine & that were 2 Richard Hughes living the area at the same time. Hers married a Hannah.

I thought my Richards siblings were Eliza b1874, Sarah b1875 both in Crewe, then Mary b1878, John Thomas b 1883, Benjamin b1885, Hugh b1888, Robert b1890 and Maria b1896 all born around Hetton/Easington in Durham.

But now this GR member has added Eliza and Sarah to her family tree and so now I'm not sure who is right or wrong!!

I also have a marriage cert for William and Margaret for 27/6/1874 at St Paul, Crewe but the ages don't tally with the census details!!

Please can anyone help?? :-S

Ok thanks!
So I have got the right set of people then and the GR member has added them to her tree wrongly!
just need to find out if the marriage cert that I have for Richard's parents is the right one now!
On the cert it states that William was 21 and Margaret was 20 when they married in 1874 but all the census' state that there was about 10 or 11 years between them!

I do have the cert for that marriage too as I was unsure of which one it might be!
But the ages on this one don't match up with the census' either! It states that there is 3 years between them! So now I have no idea where or when they got married. Only that they were married by the time Richard came along!

Thanks for any help!!! :-S

Who were the parents and witnesses on William and Margarets marriage in Crewe?

Maryb.

Tracy

Tracy Report 21 Jan 2012 19:14

John and Elizabeth Williams.

I also states that BOTH William and Margaret's fathers were Hugh Hughes!! William's was a laborer and Margarets a shoe maker.

I have also contacted Crewe registry to check that the ages were copied down correctly and they said yes they were but often the census' were wrong! But I don't see how 3 census'of them could put down the wrong ages!

1911,26,Forster Street South Hetton.( next door to Richard who is at 27,Forster street.)
Margaret Hughes born 1854 widow
Signed on her behalf by son Benjamin.

William Hughes 1845 maybe died 1910.

I think its just a case of his age has but put down wrong and should read 31 on wedding cert, just like all the mistakes the transcribers do with the census records.
