I am trying to learn if any children were born from the marriage of Jane Knight to George Edward Bennett and how did the marriage end – death, divorce or desertion.

1901 England Census - AncestryLibrary.com

Name: Jane Bennett
Age: 25
Estimated Birth Year: abt1876
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: George Bennett
Gender: Female
Where born: Cheriton and Sandgate
Civil parish: Kensington, London, England
Ecclesiastical parish: Cheriton St Martin and Sandgate St Paul
County/Island :Kent
Country: England
Registration district: Elham
Sub-registration district: Folkestone
ED, institution, or vessel: Shorncliffe Camp
Piece: 851
Folio: 71
Paqe Number: 2
Household Members: George Bennett, Jane Bennett

Married January 21, 1898 to soldier George Edward Bennett (#6491) at the Register Office in the District of Alverstoke in the County of Southampton (marriage cert. AB 655250)

According to Marriage Certificate father was Henry Knight, Army Pensioner. Her residence at time of marriage was listed as Clarence Building Gosport.

A note in George’s military file opposite “next of kin” says: “Wife with Corps”.

George (my grandfather) left the army in 1904 and married my grandmother Edith Taylor in 1913 in Toronto Canada.

I have not been able to learn more than what is shown above.

I posted on this board once before and am deeply grateful for the tremendous response - the usefulness and quality of the assistance I received was beyong anything I could have imagined.

Hopefully I can take off my training wheels soon.

You say he married Edith Taylor in 1913 in Toronto ....... do you ahve that marriage certificate?

It should say on there whether George was single, divorced or widowed ...... that's if he told the truth!

At that time was divorce an option for ordinary people?

Did women serve in the British Army at that time?

Fred

to try to answer your questions

Divorce was very expensive, not approved of, and difficult to obtain, right through to the 1920s or 30s

Almost all people, except the wealthy, just walked away ...... and married bigamously after that

No, women did not serve in the forces ............. but wives and children (including daughters) could live in married quarters .... and that is probably what is meant by her being "with the Corps".

it seems that no-one has been able to find her

so you are still left with the question of did she die, or did he skip out.

I have to say that the fact that he declared himself Single on his marriage in Ontario tends to make me lean towards the fact that he skipped out, and thus married bigamously ............... because why did he not say he was a Widower????

Thanks Sylvia - since he gave a different age every time he was asked, deceit seemed to come naturally.
