1911 Census Help please - Shenton in Lancashire

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Heather Report 16 Jan 2012 19:56

I am getting icreasingly frustrated at failing to find Eleanor Shenton on the 1911 census.
She is on the 1901 Census, date of birth 1849, living in 30 Salop Street, Kirkdale along with her husband, Randle, son Joseph aged 19 and daughter Mabel aged 9.
Joseph gets married in the following decade and is easily found in 1911 census.
Randle is also found in 1911 but living alone, still married, and has 2 boarders.
Perhaps Eleanor and Mabel were away at the time of the census but I cannot find them anywhere, using all variants of spellings.
I have tried Ancestry, FMP, 1911census etc.
I have found a Mrs Shenton on 1911census and an entry for surname Shenton with no first names on FMP.
These records do not appear on GR search which is where I have my subscription.

Would anyone be able to help me find Eleanor and/or Mabel in 1911?
Mabel didn't marry until 1920 and Eleanor died in 1916 so they both should be on the 1911 census somewhere.

Thanks in anticipation.

Have you checked out passenger lists ?

Eleanor Shenton is shown going to Canada in 1909 but I do not have access to check if the same person - on FMP. Although there does not seem to be any entry for a Mabel

Also can not check out Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 which is a possible on Ancestry

Mike - no they are not the same. Mabel was born in August 1891 but will show as 1892 on the census.
She married in Edward William Matthews in 1920 in a civil marriage in Wrexham and had twins in November 1921. Mabel died in 1932 and is buried in Wrexham.

I am really curious to find out what the entry with no forename is on FMP which GR doesn't want to give access. I'm guessing that the option of no forename does not exist in GR queries. I just hope it is Eleanor but she may have been visiting one of her children.
Thanks folks.

Thanks GlitterBaby, this was the record I wanted to see.
I don't think it's the correct Mrs Eleanor Shenton but now I can access it through the other names on the list.
I have ordered Mabel's marriage certificate which may help somewhat.

Thanks everyone. :-)

Ok, so we are now sure that the Shenton family we are looking at is the correct one.
I have had Mabel and Edward's marriage certificate which shows Mabel's father as Randle Shenton, Civil Engineer and Edward's father Charles Matthews, Coal Minor.
Mabel and Edward married from the same address in Wrexham and married at the Registry Office.

Another peculiarity about the Shenton family is that although there is a well documented Shenton family site, I simply cannot find the actual birth records of Mabel's father Randle, born around 1849, nor his father, also Randle, born around 1808.

Even though the census states the place of birth etc, I suppose this is only based on the information given to the enumerator at the time.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to find the birth record for Randle Shenton 1849, or Randle Shenton 1808-9.

Again, there is a record on FMP 1861 census for Randal Shanton born 1809 which does not appear when looking on GR ... and when I search for Shanton on FMP, it has disappeared!

So, any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks folks.

Dea that is brilliant and the right people - thank you so much.

I have just found 'Randel' and Elizabeth on the 1841 census but no children. Looks like John and Randle were twins too.

Can your results be accessed via GR at all?

Many, many thanks.

Hi folks.

I have found the original 'Randal Shanton' and he is mistakenly transcribed as 21 years old.

Many thanks for all your help - much appreciated.
