Hello
I've looked for Edward in the 1881 and 1891 censuses on FindMyPast,Ancestry and FamilySearch without any luck.
Can any of you clever people help me?

Edward Micklefield Hopton b. 1851 Goole Yorkshire
m. 1876 either Mary Wells or Jane Hobson

1861,1871 in Rothwell Yorkshire and then Hook Yorkshire with
Henry Hopton and Mary Hopton.

He might be an inmate in the workhouse in 1891in Chorlton Union Workhouse but there he's a cabdriver where he was a stoker in 1871.

Any suggestions please?

Yes Shirley I found his death but what did he do between 1871 and 1897?
I suppose he could have been on a boat like his brother Albert Henry Hopton.

The Edward Hopton in 1861, Rothwell, is born Leeds - which is definitely not Goole. Or is there another census entry?

Added:
Yes, Leeds:
Births Dec 1851
HOPTON Edward Micklefield Leeds 23 521

If he died in Wakefield, have you found the rest of his family living there in 1901?
What children did he have?
Thanks

If he died in an asylum in 1897 he may have been in one in 1891, just under his initials, not his surname.

I haven't been able to find his wife in 1891 and I haven't sent for the death cert.'Ive cut down on those since the price went up!

I don't know if he died in the asylum,I'm not sure that is him in the asylum.

He is the only one in the family born in Leeds,I had missed that.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 16 Jan 2012 21:36

are these Edward's children??

Ethelbert Spurr Hopton 1889 – 1890
Harold Hopton 1891 –
Bertram Spurr Hopton 1893 –
William Hopton 1898 –

I found 3 of the above children as step-children on the 1891 Census with Adolph and Mary Nelson

Is this possibly Mary Wales second marriage?

Marriages Sep 1898 (>99%)

Yes I did get a bit mixed up between Edward and his brother Albert.
The 4 children you found Sylvia are all Albert's.
Edward doesn't seem to have had any children. He did die in Wakefield lunatic asylum in 1897.

So far I haven't found another Mary Hopton who could be his wife or widow.

Janet

Janet Report 20 Jan 2012 22:32

Went to a talk last night about workhouses in the yorkshire area and it was said that if a person was a lunatic that they were transferred to Wakefield. Then Wakefield charged the various parishes.

As soon at the patient became any better they were immediately taken back to their local workhouse because it cost money to keep them in the asylum. If a person died in Wakefield the chances are that their family was still in their local workhouse or living with relative away.-jl

Thank you Janet
I wonder if his wife was in the workhouse in 1891. She didn't come up on a search but I'll try again.
