Joshua A Sotheran was not in the Army.
Edit:
(Just googled and he held the position of Sergeant in1851 on marriage cert.)
He was stationed with the army as a teacher.

When George was born they were in Curragh, Newbridge, Co. Kildare.
Birth registration records are from 1864 in Ireland. Before that you need the parish records.
