Not sure whether you have the detail of John Brearley of Holmfirth but if not I have found details of a John Brierley born 2nd Dec 1798 baptised at Lane Congregational Chapel Holmfirth on 9th Dec 1798 father John Brierley and mother Hannah - abode Netherthong. There is another entry with parents of the same names for a Jabez Brierley in 1797 with the abode of Oldfield which is near Honley Huddersfield. If this is the right baptism for the John Brearley of Netherthong it might help you establish the original family and the location from where they originate.-jl

My thoughts are are Elizabeth Brearley is the daughter of John and Martha Brearley of Holmfirth. I think she may have knocked off a couple or so years off her age. On the 1871 and 1891 census it clearly says that her place of birth is Holmfirth, whilst on others it says Penistone. She has named two of her children John and Martha, not proof but a possible clue. Whilst Brierley and Brearly are not too popular a name, it is possible that the two were not related as there are quite a few in the neighbouring area with both spellings.-jl

I have explained...............

I'm not sure why OYB was confused.............the info is given by the transcriber, and he has the relevant facts about the family.

OYB

If in doubt, always look at what the transcriber has deduced........

Flick

Interesting, Mike*

I hadn't considered that possibility, in view of the less-than-common surname............

EDIT:

Neither had I read the info in the post..............too much of it to take in at one go.

Her name before marriage is also Brearley.

So they could be her brothers, making them Joseph's brothers in law.

What has the transcriber taken the relationships to be?

OldYorkshireBloke

OldYorkshireBloke Report 6 Jan 2012 17:01

Joseph Brearley c1840 appears on the 1861 census (n.b. census spelling Briarley) with wife Elizabeth c 1839 living in Stocksbridge. there are also two other Brearley's named who are not their children. Jonathan c1828 and William c1848

I am trying to decipher what the 'Relationship to head of family' column says in relation to these two. - my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

The following information may have some relevance. Joseph and Elizabeth Brearley marry in March Q 1860 in Huddersfield. Her name before marriage is also Brearley. (kissing cousins ?)

Another Branch of the Brearley family I am researching have a John Brearley c1801 and Wife Martha c1811 on the 1841 census with son Jonathan c1831 and daughter Elizabeth c1836.

On the 1851 census John now c 1798 and Martha now c 1808 still have a daughter Elizabeth c1835 and also now a son William c1848. Jonathan c1828 is now resident with brother James in Netherthong.(Huddersfield area)

I have not yet been able to establish a family link between husband and wife Joseph and Elizabeth, but I think the Elizabeth Jonathan and William who appear with Joseph on the 1861 census are siblings.

Thanks for any help or insights
