Could this be Hyman's birth (its in the Mile End District which is where the family are living in the 1901 census):-

Name: COLEMAN, Male (unnamed)
Registration District: Mile End Old Town
County: London
Year of Registration: 1878
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 1C
Page No: 499

You say you have found one son of Hyman called Thomas J. Coleman born 1917. Do you have the birth certificate for this Thomas J. Coleman? This seems to be the birth you mean:-

Name: COLEMAN, Thomas J
Registration District: Shoreditch
County: London
Year of Registration: 1917
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Mother's Maiden Name: Russell
Volume No: 1C
Page No: 81

It's just that he was registered in Shoreditch and this would seem a likely marriage for his parents (although only buying the certificate would confirm or refute this):-

Name: COLEMAN, Thomas
Registration District: Shoreditch
County: London
Year of Registration: 1916
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's last name: Russell
Volume No: 1C
Page No: 93

Name: RUSSELL, Mary M
Registration District: Shoreditch
County: London
Year of Registration: 1916
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Spouse's last name: Coleman
Volume No: 1C
Page No: 93

Certainly on the 1911 census 30a Crowbridge road is a workhouse, however ive looked at all the census record 81,91, 01, but the number 30a crowbridge road does not exist, even looked at those properties that are just named, nothing found.

Not much help i know, perhaps it was not a workhouse when he was born, just guessing.
