i'm stuck on trying to find the parents of john haywood he was born abt 1802 -1806, in the 1841 census says born in
audley staffordshire but in 1851 census (age 50 ) says born mixon shropshire,could that just be an error? he lived in staffordshire and married francies pool on 25 dec 1830 at st james church audley. would love any info . thanks elaine.

Does the 1841 specify birthplace, or just say 'local' - which can be anywhere in county or to the enumerator's discretion?

As previous, the 1841 just says local. Mixon is in Staffordshire but 20 miles from Audley.

the last john is the one i havein my tree, never really thought about the childrens ages, so maybe the son john was not francies child,any help with this . thanks.

thanks for looking for me, well just been on ancestry can not believe it but found marriage cert for john(1826) and emma in 1846 both were aged 18 and john's father is called thomas. so really confused now, well this is another problem to look into. :-S

I don't know how you can tell if he was born in Audley on the 1841 census. Places of birth were not given, just if they were born in county. The image for John is so faint it would be difficult to know if he was born in county or not.

Also don't forget that ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

The 1841 census has various problems


person's place of birth is shown only as county ................. indicated as y or n on the actual image, or I or S for Ireland or Scotland.

Most people were illiterate, so mistakes are common .... they couldn't check what the nurmerator wrote down


Ages are usually rounded down to the nearest 5, butthat doesn't always occur


Relationships between people living in the same house are not shown.

ok the john born 1826 who married emma bailey in 1846, is my gg grandfather which i have the basic info about.
his father is john born 1802-1806 married francies pool 1830.
(this is the john i was trying to find who his parents were)

the confusing bit now is john & emmas marriage cert has got johns father as a thomas !!!

in the printed copy i have of 1841 census it has a y in the born in county, so take he could of been born there, but like you say they made mistakes.

all those census are what i have,thinking now maybe i could have the wrong john 1802-1806.

i started with my grandad 1881 census
george heywood dob 1881 stockport
his mother harriet heywood dob 1849 sandbach
his sister polly(mary) dob 1873
and a thomas thorley dob 1836 sandbach.

the 1851 and 1861 census are the ones above.


so will have to look into johns father again just in case i have the wrong one. ( any ideas anyone)

So you've been assuming that Harriet was a single woman.

yes i was thinking harriet was single, and you could be right
with what you found. could be i've been looking at the wrong family all this time.
the 1871 census i have looked at that before wondering if it was her,
so take it william could have died as he's not with her in 1881.

i have even found a marriage between harriet and thomas thorley in 1894
under the name of harriet booth, thats why i never found one as i was looking for haywood.

so looks like i will start again. not alot to go on about thomas haywood though, think i will be ordering some certificates this time.and see what comes up.

Perhaps Thomas Haywood didn't die until later if she waited until 1894 to marry again.
