Contact details for the GRO are here:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/contact_us.asp

I would contact them and see what they have to say - you have the Index name and period and page number, but I would check what info you are likely to get, especially as there is a chance it may not be your William, before attempting to order anything.

They can help you with any queries about ordering as well, as it's not a standard GRO ref.

I'm afraid I know as little as you :-)

Good luck!

Might it be worth contacting the GRO with the Marine Death Indices 1837-1846 ref, and asking them what information would be provided?

There is a chance it's not your William.

Would be interesting to know what sort of information they recorded for marine deaths.

Kucinta Report 28 Nov 2011 00:36

Hi David, looks like our posts crossed - I've given you census 1851 as well.

So he died between 1841 & 51, possibly before 1846 if he's the guy on the marine index I posted.

The spelling of Russel is the same.

Kucinta Report 28 Nov 2011 00:19

All I could find was this, which is not very informative.

Name: RUSSEL, William
Year: 1837-1846
Page: 167

Record source: GRO Marine Death Indices (1837 to 1846)

jax

jax Report 28 Nov 2011 00:16

So he may have died before 1837 so there would not be a death cert for him.

Or do you know whether he was alive after that date?

David

David Report 28 Nov 2011 00:12

not found on census
