thanks sylvia for the censuses yes I use Family search a lot to find things
The maria shufflebotham I was looking for guided by family search was daughter of Jame and elizabeth shuflebotham.
She appears to be the only daughter of the second marriage of her mother ,who would have been around 40 when she was born - hence no full siblings
A lot of what I'm piecing together at present is just wishful thinking hoping I find a piece of the jigsaw that cements them all together thanks for the help

Thanks vanessa yes there are various people looking at the grindeys of staffordshire. No one has been able to place my link into other established line, and no others I have been in contact with have managed to identify what happened to Mary. this is why I chose to post here about it
a recent brekthrough was discovering that Mary's mother had been Ann stubbs. Previously we only had her forename.
we still have no marriage date for them.
I had hoped that by identifying the fate of Mary grindy/grindey/grinday/grundy/grundey/grindley it might bring me further.
I now find myself looking more at the stubbs connections, because I think there might be someting coming from that end
I'm not sure how much Fun it is ,can be a little hair torn out now and again but great when find something

There has been quite a lot of work done on the Grind(e)ys in Staffordshire! I have a Mary Grindy married into my Brooks family in 1872, and was very well guided by some people involved in the research.
See if this link helps any:
www.russellajj.co.uk/dowlerweb-o/p119.htm
Many of the Grindeys named children after their own parents, hence cousins all with the same names. To add to the confusion, there were cousins marrying cousins!
Have fun trying to sort them all out!

for reference purposes, so that I/we can see who else was in that household in 1851
1851 Census
Name: Richard Stubbs Age: 33 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1818 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Ann Stubbs Gender: M (Male) Where born: Leek, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Macclesfield Town: Macclesfield County/Island: Cheshire Country: England Registration district: Macclesfield Sub-registration district: Rainow

Address:- Waters, Old Nag Head
This Maria was born in Macclesfield.
The one on the 1841 Census is shown as born ca 1834, and Not Born in County, ie, not born in Staffordshire
so the two could be the same person

Dear marie Celeste and porkie and anyone else out there
I am beginning to belive that there was only one mary grindy born and baptised at leek frith/ Meerbrook.
Marys mother ann seems to have had a younger brother born 1817 bapt 1818 leek. In 1851 he is in macclesfield as an innkeeeper, and the servant in the inn is maria shufflebotham who was with Mary Grindy in leekfrith in 1841
Marias parents were James Shufflebotham and elizabeth stubbs( stubbs apparently being the widowed name of Elizabeth)
Richard and ann's mother was elizabeth ( married name stubbs) I wonder if Maria is the half sister of Ann stubbs and richard)this is not stated on the census - only servant, as she was a paid employee.I have other incidences of apprentices and servant being in the employ of a family member but without their family relationship being written on the census. could anyone check for me the censuses of 1861 and 1871 for Richard stubbs b leek 1817/18 and see who was in the household thanks

Normally, a woman would have remarried in her last married name rather than her maiden name.

On the marriage of James shufflebotham to elizabeth stubbs1829, it has elizabeth stubbs as widow, would stubbs then be he widowed married name or her maiden name
There was a marriage of William stubbs to elizabeth which I can't find a date for. Ann the mother of Mary grindey was the daughter ( I think) of william and elizabeth stubbs. Could the elizabeth stubbs who married james shufflebotham possibly have been ann's mother?

It is possible that Mary in both 1841 censuses are one mary
I checked Maria shufflebotham .It seems that she was baptised 13 april in Macclesfield parents James and Elizabeth Shufflebotham.
Elizabeth was widowed at the time of her Marriage to James in 1829, but her name given on the marrige record on IgI is Stubbs, which is the same surname as the mother of mary in fenton.
I wonder if maria and Mary could have been cousins through their mothers elizabeth and ann. I still need to prove a conction between elizabeth and ann more than just surnames.

Thanks Marie Celeste I had the 1841 census for the grindy family but hoped the other would show another family with the name of the parents.
the 1851 clearly shows that mary Grindy ( grindey) was born at leek frith, this corresponds to the place( Meerbrook equates as near as one can to leekfrith) of baptism of mary and her brothers (and their place of birth on subsequent censuses).
As the other Mary grindy was in Leek frith for the 1841 census - I wondered where she was born. as she is obviously not with her parents it is a little difficult to say where she was born.
Or could both be the same person mary of the family overnighting in Leek frith with relatives. I have several examples in my tree of people appearing twice at the same census.
at least we can definatley rule out the sampson jones marriage.
there is a possible mariage to james swindles at heaton Norris in 1863, but that would leave the question wehre was she in 1861 and what happened to her after the marriage.
