Extremely puzzled... KING family, GGG Grandparents

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Danny Report 15 Nov 2011 08:08

Having a lot of trouble with this one. I'm trying to find my GGG Grandparents. Here's what I know.

They had a child Rachel Amelia King b 17 Dec 1884 in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia.

Rachel married Raphael Moses Eve on 15 Oct 1906 in Brisbane, Queensland. On the marriage certificate it states that Rachel's parents are

Samuel King (cook) and Sarah Boyle

I can not find ANY evidence of a marriage for these two. I found a a cemetery index for a shared grave on ancestry suggesting that

Samuel King 1863/4-1931 and Sarah Boyle 1867-1941

However. When I look at other trees, they show that Samuel and Sarah are from Somerset, UK and that Sarah isn't a BOYLE at all but is a COCKRAM.

I hadn't found any evidence of another Samuel / Sarah couple living in Queensland at the time and now I'm totally puzzled and my brain is collapsing in on itself!

Is there anyone that can offer any assistance? I am waiting for the birth certificate of Rachel to come which will hopefully clear up some issues but Queensland is such a pain to get things from.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

a Sarah Jane Cockram married a Samuel King in 1890

Marriages Dec 1890 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

>>>Cockram Sarah Jane Taunton 5c 620
Hart Jessie Eliza Taunton 5c 620
>>>King Samuel Taunton 5c 620
Pring Alfred Taunton 5c 620

which rules out the possibility that this is your Samuel King and Sarah, if their daughter was born in Australia in 1884.

Never rely on information in other people's trees, it is not always properly researched!!!

This is the marriage referred to and it took place in Somerset at a time when, presumably, you have Sarah living in Australia?

I don't rely on other people's trees. I never trust them :) . But that aside, I can't find a marriage for the two. Anywhere in Australia or UK (so far for UK).

The only reason I was worried about that other tree's contents is because we both used the same cemetery index as a likely death for the pair. In all the research I've done on this couple I've never come across a second Sarah and Samuel, which is what stumped me.

Unfortunately, if they were born overseas and came to Australia in time for an 1884 birth of Rachel, the only travel records I can access are from 1890 onwards.

Qld birth:

1885/B33571
Rachel Amelia King
[father not named]
[mother] Sarah King

Possibly another sibling named Edith Alice KING b. 1889. [Possible death for her in 1891 as Edith Alice KING, father Fredk WILLIAMS, mother Sarah KING!]

A Sarah KING died in 1900 aged 41, born England (reg C3620). ???

Qld BDMs also show the Sarah KING who died in Sep 1941 aged 74 was Sarah Jane nee COCHRANE. She had lived in Sandgate and was interred at Lutwyche Cemetery. The Samuel who died in Sep 1931 was son of James KING & Frances MUSGRAVE; buried same cemetery, (index says he was aged 6 years but seems likely to be an error). Listed in funeral notice are wife S. King, daughter Mrs Nunn, brother W. King, and nephew W. Youngjohns. Seems not to be the right family.

Wonder if Samuel was 'made up' to cover a family secret of illegitimacy?

I just noticed you have ordered her birth cert - did you find it in the index? Or just provide name and date details to the registry?

Did Rachel remarry?

1929/B5623 Eve Rachel Amelia [m] Jolliffe Frank William

Frank William died in 1955 (reg B9565).

Danny

Danny Report 15 Nov 2011 10:21

Puzzling. It's def not the family that were in England as the daughter Rachel was born in Queensland in 1884. There is an index for her birth

Registration Year: 1885
Registration Place: Queensland
Page Number: 8036
Registration Number: B033571

That same date is listed on her son's birth certificate, and the age matches what was listed on her future marriages.

As you said the birth registration doesn't list the father but his name was listed on the marriage certificate to Rachel's first husband Raphael Moses Eve.

@choccy. I thought they may have been the right Sarah and Samuel, as they were buried together and I hadn't come across any other Sarah and Samuel King's in Qld. But I guess they aren't the right ones at all if a Somerset, UK King family with the same name rocked up.

Danny

Danny Report 15 Nov 2011 10:24

I can't even find an electoral roll for a Samuel and Sarah King anytime before, around or after Rachel's birth. Something's not right here.

Danny

Danny Report 15 Nov 2011 10:25

Yes Cherilyn she did remarry JOLLIFFE.

Rachel is last seen in 1963 electoral roll as Rachael Amelia Jolliffe living in Redcliffe, Petrie with her daughter Violet Ellen Latz (nee Eve) and Sidney Latz.

Cherilyn

Cherilyn Report 15 Nov 2011 10:26

Even though Rachel gave those names as her parents on her marriage certificate, doesn't mean she was telling the truth! ;-)

And ya know what, that would totally fit too! So many secrets and marriages and cover ups in this side of the family.
