It is NOT TRUE that records for deceased men cannot be found amongst surviving service records. There are plenty amongst the records on Ancestry.

I guess you're right, Flick, although I didn't think that they went through the records to filter out the ones who had died. I thought, perhaps, those that had died had been stored in a different repository that hadn't survived WW2. But once more I was wrong.

Great job, Milliemolly! You made Dawn very happy.

Margee

The absence of the brother's records may be due to the WW2 destruction of 70% of all records

I can't honestly see Ancestry filtering out the ones for men who died...........imagine how long it would take to read every page of every record!

sorry to disapoint you but one of my relations died in 1917 and i got his records from there named eldred lee, so some of those who died do have service records out there.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 12 Nov 2011 14:09

I think Choccy is correct about no records for deceased servicemen but I have no proof. However I've never seen such records. For instance my grandfather's records are there but not those of his brother who was killed in the war.

Flick

Choccy

Where does that info about not including records for deceased servicemen come from?

Do they read every page of the records they transcribe and filter out those relating to soldiers who died?

DawnWilson

DawnWilson Report 12 Nov 2011 13:10

thats him, the thing is with the 4 day free lookups on ww1 records on ancestry i have spent the last 2 days looking for him on there and have not found him only his war medal card, would love to read his service records.

thank you for your help

Choccy

Choccy Report 12 Nov 2011 13:10

Ancestry records don't always show deceased soldiers' records -

Flick

Flick Report 12 Nov 2011 13:09

70% of WW1 records were destroyed in WW2..the result of enemy action

Most of us have to accept that we will never find WW1 service records for relatives
