The 1915 marriage shows Richard John Regan costermonger, I assume still alive as profession given? Witnesses were John Regan (? his dad, they seem to use middle names sometimes) and Mahala Anderson (this is a friend at the address he gave as his residence, but he was not living at this address then, he already had 2 children with minnie cable and she was pregnant (with my dad) !

The earlier marriage, 1897 to Caroline, divorce papers show that there were no children. The 1901 census for this marriage gives wife as Carry Regan.
Address on this census matches information I obtained from Kew when I looked at the divorce papers.
Thanks for your help.

Had his dad died before his marriage??
Who were the witnesses.

There was a John Regan born Bethnal Green(builders labourer)
with a Caroline on census returns 1901 + son Dennis age 1 ,but 1911 John is a widow.
Could this be the John married to Caroline S Wallace.

The 1903 is close. On the 1915 marriage cert. his father is Richard John (costermonger). I do find it all confusing!

I am hoping a birth date may be the key. I contacted Dublin GRO they have over 40 John Regans born in 1875! His surviving son believes 1875 to be correct.

His death cert. gives his age as 61 in 1936.

I am trying to think of records which may give date of birth, I tried work records, medical records I don't think are kept, I can't seem to access union records, feel like I am clutching at straws!

The 1903 marriage I posted earlier is this one:-

Name: John Richard Regan
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1883
occupation: Labourer
Spouse Name: Elizabeth Louisa Knight
Spouse Age: 19
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 13 Sep 1903
Parish: Walworth St John the Evangelist
Borough: Southwark
xxxx Father Name: John Richard Regan xxxx
occupation: Labourer
Spouse Father Name: Charles Pepper Knight
Register Type: Parish Register

Age is not correct so probably not yours but the names fit and the address given on the record is 19 King and Queen Street!
(some coincidence)

Catherine, the details he gave were not always correct. His age varies on the records, He and Minnie had 2 children before they married in 1915. Their first son was born in 27 Queen St. which confirms the 1911 record to be him.
If the other marriage record is of him (1897- 1904) the family did not know of this, this could be the reason for a few fibs!

The only Irish history I have is his fathers name Richard John, I do not know his mothers name or if he had any siblings. He has one surviving son who was only three when he died. Most of the familly believe Cork to be the locaton, but there are other possibilities.
Thanks for you help.

The tree on ancestry is mine! I have birth certificates of some of his children showing him as fishmonger etc, later ones show he worked for GER and LNER at Stratford rail works as a boiler makers labourer. I have been to Kew to research the staff rail records and drawn a blank.

Fraser Alfred Martin W. Ham 4a 457

........this does not show his middle name?

If you have the certificate does it not give his father's name?

Melvyn

Melvyn Report 11 Nov 2011 11:02

In 1911 he used his middle name Richard on the cencus, he was known as Dick. Lived in Queen St Stratford.

Melvyn Report 11 Nov 2011 10:59

He came to England probably in the 1890,s. He married Minnie Cable in 1915. They lived in Stratford London. I have also found another marriage record for a John Regan which I have not been able to link to the one I am researching (my grandfather) this is from 1897 to Caroline Selina Wallace, they divorced in 1904/6. My dad always told me that they came origionally from Cork.

Catherine Report 11 Nov 2011 10:48

Do you have him on 1911 census?

Any idea when he came to England and where he lived?

Who did he marry?
His marriage cert. will give you his father's name which will help find or confirm a birth record!

I am looking to find date of birth of above so that I can look in the Irish birth records to locate where he was born.
I have extensive records of his life in England from 1911 to his death in 1936.
I have researched staff records for Stratford rail works, where he worked.
