Hello

I am trying to trace my ancestry, I remember some of the stories and know some of the people who are related to me but I am findin it hard to follow the papaer trail - help

Lewis Calder born 1839 - found on 1841 census - was sent to Australia on a convict ship 1860

related to Stokes family from Lanark (Carstairs) and Jardines in Canada through Elspeth Calder???

Related to Logan? Scott? in Canada through Annie Logan (nee Calder) also in Lanarkshire (Coalburn? Lesmahagow?)

help me to join the dots if you can ta :-)

Hello Loraine, and welcome to the boards. There's still some big gaps between the dots!

What else do you know about Elspeth Calder and Annie Calder? Who were their parents, spouses, children? When and where were they born?

Have you used the Search Trees facility above to look for likely connections?

For reference:

Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868

Convicted Date: 4 Oct 1860

Sentenced to 6 years, doesn't say what crime was.

So did he change his name at some point?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 9 Nov 2011 18:41

This death seems to tie in with the Convict register:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985

Name: Louis William Calder
Father's Name: Lewis
Registration Year: 1885

Loraine - can you confirm if he had a middle name and if his father's name was Lewis?

Loraine, have you done any research on Scotland's People? It's pay per view but very reasonably priced for credits.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

It's difficult to take this any further until you answer the questions and provide some further info.

There are numerous trees on Ancestry that have the calder family but one in particular has all the Jardines, too.

It would be worth contacting them to share info. If you're not a member of Ancestry then you can join Mundia (a spin-off) for free http://www.mundia.com/gb/.

You can search and view trees and contact owners.

Seeing as Loraine's new to the boards I've sent a pm advising her she needs to check back here.

Lorraine,

lot's of information has been found for you, but I notice in your post you asked for help in trying to find information.

To search old newspaper reports etc for Australia, a good source to access is this site: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q=

This enables you to select newspapers from a particular State or Territory and is very useful, as you can search all sorts of things.

best of luck with your search :-)

Hi Marie

The Calders of 1841 census you put on here - that is the one that I found and is related to the Calders i am researching.

Elspeth and Annie are much later around 1890's for Elspeth and 1900 - 1910 for Annie. Annie married John Logan and had a daughter Mary and a son John? Mary and Annie moved to Canada. Mary had married at least once before going to Canada.

They live in Coalburn/Lesmahagow area before going to Canada, John Logan stayed in Coalburn/Lesmahagow - he had a handlebar moustache - is the only thing I remember of him - I was quite little when there was some sort of family reunion - around about 1970's

Loraine

PS thank you for this wow I didn't expect to get so much response

LaineH Report 10 Nov 2011 08:34

Thank you all of you for the responses, it is quite overwhelming an hopefully I'll be able to fill in some of the gaps.

I had not thought of using the message boards before. ALso as mentioned before I stopped using the Genes reunited site some time ago - but will start using it more now :-)

thank you again

Hi Marie

I have used the maudai site and found the missing link - one of them to link up with the Jardines - I even remember seeing the photo in my Grannies photo box of Cousin Jean - she was a lovely person and Charles her husband too - I really enjoyed their visits to Scotland

I also understand now why I could not find her birth in the Scottish records - she was born in England

Thank you so very much

Loraine
