Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help unravel the mystery of my wifes grandfather Peter Kelly, his first wife and parents. Heres what we do know:-

Peter Kelly was married in Halifax on 22 September 1920. We have the certificate which confirms he married Doris Buckley a spinster (we knew this already),, worsted spinner and both he and his wife were aged 23 at the date of their wedding. Peter was a Chemical works labourer on the certificate.
In particular it states that his father was Michael Kelly (deceased timber works labourer) and that Peter, though only 23 was a widower, which is a surprise to me. We would like to know more about his parents and his first wife, but there seem to be a few possibilities for this.

Unfortunately Kelly is a very common name, so assumptions made below may lead me up the garden path.
We have no idea where Peter Kelly was born (could even be Ireland) only that he lived in Halifax for most, if not all of his adult life. Family recollections suggest he died in Halifax around 1950 and we have found this :-

Deaths Halifax June qtr 1950 Kelly Peter 2b 586 aged 52 putting his birth year as 1898 approx, which matches that of his second wife Doris and is consistent with his wedding day age.

Free BMd reveals a possible match for his birth in Chester le street, Durham March quarter of 1897 which lines up nicely with the only1901 census search result for a Peter Kelly aged about 3 with a father called Michael living in the Durham area. Could someone perhaps check the image to see who the parents are, this may help me see if I can find Michaels wifes christian name and birth area. Maybe then a possible match with the BMD marriage list ?

Regarding Peters first wife and making assumptions about him being brought up in Durham , I found these two possible wives who died before 1920, one with a child but he left marriage a bit late:- (looks as though ithe baby died)

Possibility 1

Births Births Mar 1897
Swinburn, Isabella born Auckland (durham) 10a 198

Marriages Dec 1914
Kelly, Peter to Isabella Swinburn Durham 10a 779

Births Dec 1914
Kelly,John (Swinburn) Durham 10a 898

Deaths Dec 1914
Kelly, John age 0 Durham 10a 506

Deaths Dec 1919 aged 24 ( born 1895)
Kelly Isabella Easington (durham) 10a 485

Possibility 2

Births Dec 1896
Cosgrove, Ellen born Hartlepool 10a 146

Marriages Dec 1915
Kelly, Peter to Cosgrove, Ellen Lanchester 10a 791

Deaths Sep 1916
Kelly Ellen age 17 ( born 1899 ?) Chester-le-S. 10a 597.. age doesn't match above DOB ?

I don't know how I can resolve this without buying a lot of certificates since there is no census in the short first marriage period to cross reference with.

Any opinions or advice or lookups I haven't thought of please ? Thanks for any help you can give.
