Hi Mary,

My wife had said that if she heard Terrys surname mentioned, she would probably recognise it. I tried a few random ones from this thread which were definite NOs but when I said Carney she said that sounded familiar and the more she thinks about it the more sure she is thats his surname ! I think all the hard work put in by everyone here has paid off. Hopefully we've found her great grandparents from Durham ! It would appear therefore that at least part of the family moved to Halifax after 1911.

Thanks again everybody.

Mary

Mary Report 5 Nov 2011 20:27

Florence kelly married William Carney, they had son Terence Carney 1926 Halifax .
So this could be Terry cousin of Agnes.

Therefore the 1911 census could be correct.

Using the local index at http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/ and the application form

Details of your chosen Marriage certificate (including spouse) are as follows:
Surname Forename(s) Year District
COSGROVE Ellen 1915 Durham Northern
KELLY Peter 1915 Durham Northern
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DNRLAN68 - 114 - Durham Northern (1915)

Details of your chosen Marriage certificate (including spouse) are as follows:
Surname Forename(s) Year District
KELLY Peter 1914 Durham Central
SWINBURN Isabella 1914 Durham Central
Register No. - Entry No. - District
DCREG 94 - 44 - Durham Central (1914)

Both of these marrs are from the registrar's register.
At this date, this would indicate either a rego office marr, or an RC marr that the registrar attended as RC priests weren't authorized to keep registers until 1980ish.

I appreciate and understand your comments about my wife asking about cousins aunts and uncles or siblings of Peter. If this were possible we would already have done that. Her grandfather Peter died the year she was born and her mother Agnes (nee) Kelly died 35 years ago without mentioning anything about her family apart from the existence of her cousin Terry (surname not known). Sadly, theres nobody from her family's older generation still alive to ask. This is why we are appealing for help to glean any clues we can.

Thanks for your help. :-)

I think that what would be the most helpful would be for your wife to check with her parents, aunts, cousins, etc., to see if any of them remember any siblings of Peter. This would really help identify Peter on the 1901/1911 census, whether in England or Ireland.

NB The Irish 1901/1911 censuses are free at:

Can your wife recall the names of any of Peter's family? Any Aunts or Uncles?

FrankFromYorks

FrankFromYorks Report 5 Nov 2011 17:54

I said earlier :-
So William Hayden married Mary Kelly in 1917 ? Hence Mary Hayden. Mary was 2 years younger as per the census. I don't know, but it seems to make sense ! (Married in Halifax).

:-
Having said that, I'm wondering why both Mary Kelly and Peter Kelly were connected with Halifax as brother and sister pre-1917 unless the whole family moved ? :-S

Thank you Choccy, I had noticed that Peters age and mothers name as next of kin did not agree with the census details.

Thank you. :-)

Thanks again for the 1911 lookup, I'm hoping I can find some clues to prove this is the right family, the guy is consistent in that he's a labourer up to his death.

That would be the result I was mentioning, but I don't know if it is the right family. Theres a lot of children there I have no knowlege of. It says Michael is a dock labourer in 1901, he was a deceased timber works labourer in 1920. So I'm not sure I 'm on the right track yet.

Thank you.
