I have recently found that Fred Fullard who is a distant ancestor was killed while serving in WW1. All i can find is that he dies in 1918! I would like very much to find out where he was killed and how this happened. i can see from his military death certificate is that he was killed in 1918 along with his army rank/number.

He was born in Walsall,1898

I just cant find anything on him. I have been on military sites and found that he was awarded a standard military medal, but unable to read what it actually was etc...

I cant stress enough how much i want to know how poor fred came to his end. I have felt very connected and proud of him and want to be able to know how he was killed.

many,many thanks

There are often war diaries that you can find out how they died. There is a great war forum that you can go and and ask questions about this and they are very helpful. I also sent of for the death certificate and found out that mine was a prisoner of war and how he died. I also found out from another website of another member of the family that was killed coming back from a tunneling job and was hit bu shrapnel. Hope that helps
If you need anything else just let me know. :-D

There are lots of WW1 War Diaries on the documentsonline site which you can download for £3.50 each. Unfortunately, the one you want isn't on there. However, someone on the site suggested by nuttybongo might have a copy of the diary. If not, and you can wait a while, all WW1 war diaries will be online in the next year or so!

I know now that he was killed in the commonwealth is there anyway i can go into more detail to know if he was shot or blasted?

TO ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION I HAVE JUST FOUND THE SITE OF THE WAR CEMETERY WHERE FRED IS NOW RESTING AND BASICALLY HE WAS SHOT.

I am very shocked at how emotional finding this information is. I feel very close to Fred,Despite he passing many many years before my birth.

In my tree so far he is the only one that i have found that served and died in WW1 or WW2.

Bravery awards usually announced in London Gazette but nothing obvious for Fred:

A certificate to commemorate his sacrifice is available to download free of charge on the Commonweath War Graves site.

Search for him as F Fullard and when this appears:

click on his name and the certificate link is at the bottom of the next page.

It must be fairly easy to travel across to that cemetery.
Poperinge is twinned with a town near here and towns people frequently pay visits to their 'twin's' events.
