Where did you see the same family shown twice on the 1861 census?


I compared the 1861 Census with the surname Robey, with the 1851 Census where they are using Newport ......... to show that it was indeed the same family


As for why ............


Christina (Lancashire) has posted one possible reason for you


Charles was born before his mother's marriage to John Roby

The assumption there would be that he grew up as Rob(e)y, switched to Newport, then switched back again to Rob(e)y


but we can only guess as to why he switched back and forth!

I wonder why the family used 2 names - really strange that the parents are listed twice on 1861 census with different children. I cant get my head around it all at the moment - any suggestions?

I am going to look for Albert now - he is missing on 2 census' s maybe he is listed as Robey....

On the 1861 census there is a Harriett Robey b1857 Ashbury, Berkshire.

Parents Charles & Ann.

She has several siblings but I can see no matching Roby/Robey births for them (bar one for Francis) on FreeBMD......but there are matching Newport births.

Could Robey have been Charles' Step Father's name and he was using this instead of Newport on the earlier census??

Hi there,
Her Mother was Anna Ballringer - The Marriage record I have found on Ancestry lists her as father Charles and the witness is her Brother in Law who I know was married to Elizabeth her sister so I am sure of her mother's name. Hope this makes sense but it has also been confirmed by someone who is her direct descendent I have recently contacted.
However I did not know of her until then as she is not to be found with the rest of the family on a census before she was married

That does look like her but she Married William Sharpe in Camden in 1877 and died in 1913.

She may have been born in 1856

- odd that she is not with her family....
