Find Ancestors

Does anyone have access to Canadian records? I am trying to find the birth of my grandfather known as Edwin aka Evan McPherson born 1873. His father was William McPherson unfortunately do not know wife's name. Any help would be appreciated as I am really struggling.

The only possible match I can see is a Robert E Mcpherson. Father is William Mcpherson, mother Isabella smith both of Scotland. Robert E died 28 May 1934. Does this sound possible?

Like the UK, Canada has no national BMD registration. In Canada's case, it's a provincial responsibility, so you need to know which province had jurisdiction.

for birth records you need to know what province, all vital statistics are recorded on a province by province basis

only some provinces have searchable databases on line

the 1881 census is free at familysearch.org but the site is down now when I try

at Ancestry I don't see an Edwin or Evan to match that birthdate in the 1881 census

you need to give more information that you have to help identify him

might he be this person in the 1901 census in Hochelaga Quebec ?

Stuart if you would tell us what you know about your grandfather ... that we obviously do not ?

there is no point in people guessing at censuses etc

where did he live in Canada ??

what was his wife's name, did he have children by 1911 ?

where and when did he die ?

if he was married ( had children ) by 1911 it should be possible to find them in a census one way or another

it's been explained that birth marriage death records have to be searched for by province

without knowing what province he lived in, nobody can help at all really ...

Thanks for your help, fairly new to this and find it confusing. I have very little
information and no one to ask. I am doing this for my husband. We do not know where his grandfather was born, cannot find any birth for him in England or Scotland. This is all info I have- I have copy of marriage certifcate for Edwin aka Evan McPherson dated 28/4/18, bachelor, aged 45, profession shown as Seaman, father's name William Macpherson, surname can be spelt either way. I do not know if he was born in Canada, just trying. Only know that he was in England when he married in April 1918.
My father in law was born in Dec 1918, named Evan Cluny McPherson, father's name shown as Evan McPherson,profession Able Seaman, wife's
name is Ellen Eliza McPherson who was a widow. With regards to William I have no details. Hope you can give so suggestions. Thanks for interest.

mmm ... it is really nice to know if something is a guess and not a known fact ! the odds are that he didn't come from Canada ... but it's possible that he did and was in the Canadian navy in WWI maybe ...
