Sorry duff information, I'd got that bit of information wrong. Still can't find an exact match to their marriage, may have to take a couple of gambles with Richard Jones and some marriage certicates. Thanks for your interest again

Reference to another wife in 1891??

Hi Astra, I'm glad it's not just me. One of her children was May who was my great grandmother. But as yet no marriage certificate. I have found reference to another wife in the 1891 census called Mary so beginning to wonder he Richard never married Rose??

In 1911 she says she has been married for 26 years and had 6 children all of which are still living.
I can't locate the marriage though.

She's a mystery not being on the 1861 census but there could be reasons for that. She married Richard Andrew Jones but again, not finding it easy to locate an accurate marriage for them both, Not done too much research on him yet but believe he was from Manchester. Rose went into service after her time at Blackbrook and there's a couple of marriages listed for Richard Jones in London where she works, which need investigating, I will pursue her birth in Liverpool but again struggling with parentage. Thanks to everyone for suggestions so far :-)

family stories really should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Please do try not to be so dogmatic when all the evidence seems to be pointing to her birth in Liverpool.


It could be that Rose Ann's's parents were Irish, but she herself was born in Liverpool. She could however have spoken with an irish accent, because her parents spoke with an Irish accent ........ and there were lots of Irish people in Liverpool


My own daughter was born in a foreign country, but spoke with a British accent becasue both her parents are English.

Anyone who met her in her teens and early 20s would have said she was English born! Whereas she was born and brought up here.

Strangely, censuses comtinue to state that she is from Liverpool but my family are emphatic that Rose was from Ireland. I shall check out the birth you have given me though, thank you. Records from Blackbrook also hold the key

'Although the census states she was born in Liverpool, my maternal grandmother who knew her well told me she was definitely Irish. I've written to the Sisters of Mercy who ran Blackbrook at that time but have yet to receive a response about Rose's time there'

Back to Rose. Have you found her in any other census after 1871? I wonder what birthplace is given.

I am looking for any information about my great, great grandmother's early life in Liverpool before she found herself in Blackbrook Industrial School, St. Helens as a scholar. I think she was born in County Leitrim, Ireland in 1857 and came to England soon after. Then the trail goes dead and she firstly appears on th 1871 census. Before then nothing. Any ideas what to do next or is she also an ancestor of yours??? Please help :-S
