My great-great grandfather, John Knight born c1831 was married to Mary, born c1829. They were both from Cornwall. He was born in Menheniot, she was born in St Germans. |

Mother's maiden name would be on the child's birth certificate |

Oh, of course. I'll see if the birth registration of any of the children lists her name. Thanks. |

Carol - mother's maiden name is actually only shown on registrations from Sep 1911. |

The John Knight marrying in 1857 didn't marry a Mary: |

That's very helpful, thanks. I thought 1855 was more likely anyway. |

Thanks Mike. I'd found that record. No problems in tracking her in the censuses but obviously only in her married name. |

Carol, don't know where you're searching records, but you always need to look at who else is on the page. |

I posted the 1881 census to discover a child's name as you never gave one. |

I was looking at ancestry but the image only shows those whose surname begins with K. I keep forgetting about Free BMD - which I've just looked at now. I think Mary Jane could well be her. |

Carol, when you're looking at marriage records on ancestry, don't just click on "view image" you also need to clink on the page number where it says (click to see others on page) |
