Hi, I'm researching Joseph Wright who married Lucy Ross in 1851 in Tasmania. It is confusing with multiple Joseph Wrights. Thank you Tony and Marie Cleste for your information which confirms my research.
Happy to share if anyone is interested in this family. Cheers,
Rosemary

Thank you for information sent to me. I feel that Joseph James Wright is my ancestor. The name James would have been after his father's name.
Also his birth date matches. As suggested I will apply for the marriage
certificate to verify this. My next job will be to try and follow records of his offspring Eliza, James, and "F".

Thanks again

Hi David.

Wright is part of my own family name ( John Wright b.1794 ) Tasmanian Convict from Painswick Gloucester

There were many Joseph Wright marriages in Tasmania VDL....and many Joseph Wright Convicts.

There were also two Joseph WRIGHT convicts that arrived on the "Equestrian"
One in 1845....and the one you mentioned in 1852

To help narrow down the possibles.

78851 Wright Joseph Arr: 15 Oct 1845 Equestrian (2) Dept: 05 Jul 1845...... Dept port: London.... aged 22 ( Married )
Trade: Bridle Bit maker

78850 Wright Joseph Arr: 16 Dec 1852 Equestrian (3) Dept: 01 Sep 1852....Dept port: Plymouth.....aged 23 ( Single )
Native place: Broxtead? ( poss: Boxted or perhaps Braxted Essex )
Trade: Farm Labourer.....Tattoo on arm J.Wright...... Trialed at Chelmsford.27th Nov 1849....... Religion: Cof E....can read and write.
TOL ( Ticket of leave ) 18th Oct 1853

It was not considered bigamous for Convicts to re-marry even if they had a spouse back in the U.K ...Most were never to return to their home land, and would need an A.P ( absolute pardon ) or FP ( Full Pardon ) to earn the right to return to the U.K or other birth countries.

Under normal circumstances for a married Convict sent to Australia that was never to return home, a letter was sent to their spouse, giving them option to follow there husband/s our to the colony. Some did, but most did not. This allowed Convicts to re-marry and start a new life.

Convicts ( Male or Female ) also needed permission to marry, or permission to re-marry.

The two Joseph Wrights that arrived as convicts on the ship "Equestrian" made applications to marry or re-marry.

WRIGHT Joseph Ship: Equestrian..... intended spouse: ROSS Lucy came free......date of application 25 MAR 1851

WRIGHT Joseph Ship: Equestrian..... intended spouse: LAHY Betty arrived: Earl Grey.....date of application 31 JAN 1854

Betty LAHY was a female convict..... arrived on the ship "Earl Grey" in 1850

311040 WRIGHT F 1858
311041 WRIGHT JAMES 1860

Which one is yours is hard to say without further investigation.....but it might be worth ordering both marriage certs hoping that Joseph Wright has entered his parents names on cert......which you appear to know, James Wright

The only "clue" here is that the Joseph Wright who married Betty LAHY....( Also known as Elizabeth LAY ) married/registered in Clarence, Tasmania.....and the death shown was Joseph Wright aged 68 ...31st July 1897 RegNo:104 was in Clarence, Tasmania = a birth circ. 1829.
Not all....but most folk settled where they married.

From the A.V.R.I ( Australian Vital Records Index )
Ages at marriage would be approx.

WRIGHT, Joseph CM 1067049
Age: 22 Marriage
Spouse: LAHY, Betty
Age: 33
Marriage Date: 13 Mar 1854
Reg Year: 1854
Reg State: Tasmania
Ref Number: 114

WRIGHT, Joseph CM 1067048
Age: A Marriage
Spouse: ROSS, Lucy
Age: M
Marriage Date: 08 Apr 1851
Reg Year: 1851
Reg State: Tasmania
Ref Number: 968

This must be the 1907 you refer to:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985

Name: Joseph Wright
Death Date: 1907
Death Place: Tasmania
Registration Place: Richmond, Tasmania
Registration Number: 0664

It doesn't give an indication of age.

The name and age on the 1897 death seems a closer match:

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985

Name: Joseph James Wright
Death Date: 31 Jul 1897
Death Place: Tasmania
Age: 68
Registration Year: 1897
Registration Place: Clarence, Tasmania
Registration Number: 104
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1829

Thanks for your message. The information I've got so far is that my ancestor, Joseph James Wright born 1828 was sentenced to 7 yrs and transportation to Australia on 27 Nov. 1849. He was sent on the ship "Equestrian" on 27 Aug. 1852 and arrived at "Van Diemans Land".
From there I have records of two Joseph Wrights. One married a Betty Lahy and the other married a Mary Ann Revell.
One Joseph died 1907 and the other 1897. I'm not sure which Joseph is
my ancestor.
Also, Joseph's father a James Wright, was also transported on the ship
"Asia" on 6 April 1841, and arrived in Australia 21 Aug 1841.
He left behind his family in England who were in the workhouse.
His wifes name was Susan Wright.
I note that he married again to a Mary Smith on 9 July 1849.Was this a bigamous marriage?
I would like to locate any descendants if any.

I'm trying to trace Australian records in respect of my ancestors who were sent to Tasmania in the 1800's. Who would I contact for these details ?
