Charles James Lewis, born 1919? possibly Northern Ireland. Married Mary Hill in Jan.1948 St Helens, Lancashire. Possibly a sergeant in British army seconded to ATS. Only other fact is that his fathers name was Samuel.

Arrested for bigany sometime around 1951/52. Not uncommon after WW11 with such massive displacement.

Any assistance appreciated
:-)

Thanks for the replies.
Charles married my mother in 1948 and was apparently found guilty of Bigamy in '51/'52 and jailed for 6 months which was the standard sentence. His occupation was in the glass making industry, a job found for him by my maternal grandfather. Opon his return from jail apparently my grandfather sent him packing. My mother re-married some 5 years later and I was subsequently adopted and took my mothers now married name.
Family have since told me that he was already married to a lady in Northern Island with children. I was also told that he met my mother whilst she was in the ATS and he was an Army Sergeant. Unfortunately you know as much as I do as this is all I have.

Brian,

Have you checked local newspapers about the time that your father was prosecuted/jailed for bigamy. Newspapers of the day used to report such matters and if you do manage to find a report of the case it may give some details of your fathers origin and his first marriage/family.

Good luck.

Wow........
I am a little overwhelmed.....I have no idea if correct or how to check but I will try.
Thank you :-)

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 6 Oct 2011 13:31

You will need these certificates to check

But to find out if you have half brothers and sisters you will need to cross match his other wives maiden names with her new married name

Take the bull by the horns and do it ...then come back and we can try to help again

Brian

Brian Report 6 Oct 2011 14:08

Thank you...........
One Simple question. The use of the word certificate implies official records? Can these be obtained on the net or does it need a physical trip to Ireland

Second question. What is the implication of the second males record Thomas Francis Evans.

Sorry to be such a clux but you are so well informed.
Thanks again.

:-D :-D :-D :-)

KempinaPartyhat

KempinaPartyhat Report 6 Oct 2011 14:18

Ok................The second man on the page will be the other ladies hubby!!!

each page has two male two female and each is a married pair ...but often you dont know which one belongs to which coz until 1912 IN ENGLAND they didnt tell you but in 1912 they paired them up ......like the post I gave you at 8.57 this morning

As for irish records I dont know havent started that part of my tree yet!

You are not a clux but stick with one thread on these people and keep asking questions ....also I work as do others so I check back when i get home ......so time delays in answers are normal.....

This is where you can come and chat with other members about all things related to family history and researching, not for looking up Ancestors and Relatives. The Find Ancestors and Find Living Relatives Boards are intended for that and there are lots of members who will help you .

That said, Irish Birth details are available on the Family Search website. Northern Ireland as we know it today did nor come into being until 1921 but when you say NI do you have any idea of a locations?

The Family Search website has Irish civil registrations for this period but a location may help to pinpoint the one you want.

Once you have the details then you should be able to order the cert from the Irish GRO. http://www.groireland.ie/

Brian

Brian Report 6 Oct 2011 22:17

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 7 Oct 2011 10:17

Brian you can order photocopies of the register cheaper than certificates. Go to the GOIRE link that KempinaThermalhat has given you and download the application form. Give the information required i.e.

Name: >>>>>>>>>Charles James Lewis
Registration District: >>>>>>>>>Rathdrum
Event Type: >>>>>>>>MARRIAGES
Registration Quarter and Year: >>>>>>>>>Apr - Jun 1939
Volume Number: >>>>>>>>>>>>2
Page Number: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>653

I am not sure if they are able to accept online requests using credit cards yet. I 'phoned them a couple of years ago when I was ordering some certificates and they told me that they would accept payment in euros if you mailed the payment and application by "signed for" mail. The service was fairly quick.

Brian, Have a look here

https://familysearch.org/search/records#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ALewis~%20%2Bbirth_place%3A%22Rathdrum%2C%20Ireland%22~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1939-1949~

I searched for births for Lewis in Rathdrum 1944 +/- 5 years and there is only 1 and the mother's maiden name is Hempenstall. So it looks like Charles married Martha.

Good Luck!

Brian
