Sapper is the rank of a serving member of the Corps of Royal Engineers - equivalent to Private in other Regiments/Corps

From wikipedia

A sapper, also called pioneer or combat engineer, is a combatant or soldier who performs a variety of military engineering duties such as bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defences and general construction, as well as road and airfield construction and repair. They are also trained to serve as infantry personnel in defensive and offensive operations. A sapper's tasks are devoted to tasks involving facilitating movement of allied forces and impeding those of enemies.

The term "sapper" is used in the British Army, Polish Army, Commonwealth nations and U.S. military.

Thanks Jax. I'm not aware of any military positions he had. That's not to say he didn't. When they moved to Australia he worked as a labourer / landscaper for the council at a golf course.

Not excluding it though.

Also wondering what 'Sapper' would be a nickname for?

Is anyone able to help find these two individuals leaving UK for South Africa? I still can't.

Reginald George MALLOWS (b1873 in Essex, England)
Elizabeth Jane STEWART (b1871 in Armagh, Ireland)

As mentioned above, from Reginald's death certificate it looks like the couple were married in South Africa. They had three children. Born between roughly 1902-1909, all in South Africa.

I'm guessing maybe they went to South Africa separately and met there and married, or they went together as singles and married over there. I'm unsure.

If anyone could assist with finding them leaving UK for South Africa, that would be helpful. I've tried contacting South Africa for birth certificates for the kids and marriages for the couple but if anyone else has had had to deal with them, they'll appreciate how difficult it is.

Cheers,

Eileen

Does anyone know anywhere online to search South African documents? I've tried looking around, and even contacting a group that offered to search documents on your behalf.

No luck though.

Hey guys. Thanks for all the info you've provided. His name on the CENSUS was GEORGE and sometimes the surname was mispelt as MALLOUS.

It is possible they were married in South Africa. I haven't been able to locate George / Reginald and Elizabeth leaving England for South Africa. That itself would let us know if they were married in the UK or South Africa if Elizabeth's maiden name is listed.

Can anyone assist with this?

I have his death cert listed on ancestry so that's probably my tree you're viewing :)

Cheers

Ginny, Hi - I think the death certificate states age when married ,not how many years married

Ive just looked at his death cert that is on a public tree

It says he married in Jburg and at the time of his death had been married for 30 years, making his marriage year 1922?

Seems a bit late?

Maybe Im not looking hard enough....I cant see his birth?

Flick

Flick Report 5 Oct 2011 16:46

No sign of him in England in 1901

No sign of either of them in Ireland in the same year

EDIT...........

I looked for the woman as STEWARD, as per text of your post.

Which version of her surname is actually correct?

Hi, On Ancestry there is a copy of the death cert. At the end there is a question about marriage, and it says married in Johannasburg. Guess you will have to try there.

Hi all,

I'm hoping for some help in finding a marriage certificate for my GG Grandparents.

Reginald George Mallows b 1873, Hadstock, Essex d 08/04/1952 Mordialloc, Victoria, Australia (known as Reginald OR George)

Elizabeth Jane Stewart b 1871, Armagh, Northern Ireland d 15/09/1943 Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (known as Lily)

The two went to South Africa around 1900 - 1902 where they gave birth to 3 children and came back to Southampton on 30 June 1911. I have all that information *unless you're able to help with birth / death certificates FROM SOUTH AFRICA*

I have had NO luck at all finding any marriage information at all. I want to buy a wedding certificate, but without the GRO index, I think it would be a waste of time even applying.

Is there anyone who can help? I have my G Grandmother's birth certificate from 1909 in Johannesburg, South Africa and that states that Reginald and Elizabeth were married at that time. I would guess their marriage would be between 1891 - 1901.

Hope to hear from someone soon.

Thanks :-D
