Find Ancestors

I am seeking assistance finding a James Hobday.

My great great grandfather was James Hobday I believed he was born around 1816 however I now have info that it may have been 1822 in Cheriton Kent and died in NZ in 1892.

He married Margaret Foliie (Foley) (born Ireland 1828) near Dover in 1846. He is listed in the death notice as a Crimean war veteran. He came to NZ about 1874, sponsored by the Kent Agricultural Workers Union.
His parents are given as Edward Hobday and Rebecca Carvel (Carval) on his death certificate. He had three daughters and one son who never married as far as I know. He worked as a farm laboror.
There was another larger Hobday family who had a business and where in the military in Christchurch NZ and there are still Hobdays there but if they are related to mine it must be very distantly, they are more likely to be more middle class than laborors.

Not seeing a marriage...where did you get that from?

Jax, The marriage info came from the NZ death certificates of both James and Margaret, just given as Married near Dover 1846.

Lynski, Margaret's death certificate gives her maiden name as Foley, born Cork Ireland.

There is a third daughter Ellen Maria Hobday born 1855, she did not emigrate to NZ with the rest of the family, I suspect she was either married or deceased in 1874.. Took a while to find her , both parents death notices in NZ news papers refer to three daughters and one son.

It looks like her maiden name was Fuller as per the marriage I gave you in 1854

Whatever is on a death cert is only as good as what the informant knows

As Lynski has said you will need to purchase a birth cert to confirm her maiden name

Thanks jax don't think I doubt what your saying as I obviously have some info wrong. There were two things led me to believe that James wife was a Foley. Firstly the death cert gave her fathers name as John Foley and her place of birth as County Cork Ireland. Prior to joining Genes I found on Family Search web site an accurate record of James death in NZ in 1892, I know Family search is often wrong because it has him incorrectly born in 13 Jan 1819 Hyde Park London. But it seemed an interesting coincidence. The Family search link on this is to his wife as Margaret Follie born 21 June 1828 in Ireland. Father John, mother Ellen Moore Chard. Hi Lynski will order a birth cert for one of the children to try and confirm mothers maiden name. Can anyone confirm that the maiden name is usually on the cert. Some of the earlier NZ certificates lack detail.

I have the marriage certificate for James (father Edward) and Margaret Anne it gives her maiden name as Fuller and her father John. I also have the birth certificate for Ellen Maria Hobday my great grand mothers sister which also gives her mothers maiden name as Fuller, Can anyone assist with finding the birth of Mary Anne (Poly) Hobday my g grandmother.
I would have prefered her birth cert but couldn't find her.

Also any info on Edward pretty he married Rebecca Carvel (spelling).
