Good heavens George and Anne of GG, many thanks for all this information, particuarly the info from the Pedigree resource file! You've definitely got the right family, even my grannie (Kathleen) is mentioned "Kathleen who married a Mr. Claridge and lives at Witney". Funnily enough I only live about eight miles away from Stopsley.
Many thanks for all your efforts

Notes ¦Letter from Rev. Jeffery Tredwell 5 Apr 1979 My grandfather's grandfather's grandfather - Jeffery Tredwell, yeoman of Wendlebury, Oxon (1703-1779) married Anne King of Bucknell 12/1/1737, he too being of Bucknell at the time. Christmas letter from Rev. Jeffery Tredwell "When Prudence was 23 she married Edward Tredwell who was 26. Edward was born at Kidlington , (I have found no referemce to Edward's date of death except that it must have been between the date of the birth of their last child in 1706 and the death of Prudence as a widow in 1716.) near Oxford, where his father, grandfather and great grandfather wer farmers like most of the Tredwells. Perhaps it was because of this that he and Prudence were married in St. Michaels Church, Oxford, by lic. in Aug 1692. ..Edward was already living at Bucknell as a farmer, but later he is described as a maltster. He and Prudence had 2 dau & 3 sons. One son, born in Jan 1703, was named Jeffery. When he grew up he married Anne King of Bucknell, and moved to Wendlebury where he became one of the principal farmers. He, is of course where my first book started with.
...
Jeffery and Anne of Wendlebury had two sons and one daughter; William, then Jeffery who died as an infant, and you will see now why they called their daughter Prudence."

[pg 5] The story continues now through Jeffery, the eldest son of the Chesterton Grange family. On May 2nd. 1791, after the calling of banns, he married Elizabeth Clark in the Parish Church of St. Michael at Newton Purcell. Soon they moved to Cottisford where Jeffery was churchwarden of St. Mary's Church in 1793 and subsequent years. [His signature as such on B.T.s in the Bodleian was one of my biggest thrills and break-throughs in 1975.] They had three sons and three daughters.

Newington, md Cissie HOWSE Elizabeth Jeffery William Mary Ann Thomas (1868- ) md Marion COOK Richard (1871-1947) of New House Farm, Oddington md Emily C.H. Wheeler (1899)
[pg 10] Willm Tredwell was born at Oddington Grainge on Thursday December 3rd, 1829 at one o'clock in the morning.
pg 6 - Took up "Barndon" Farm [pg 10 longhand] “ From the Family Registers mentioned on page 6" Willm. Tredwell was born at Oddington Grainge on Thursday December 3rd, 1829 at one o’clock in the morning pg 12 In doing so we begin with John Clark Tredwell's son William -born at the Grange on Thursday December 3rd. 1829 at l.a.m., being his 3rd. son and 8th child. Of his upbringing and education little is known, but there are indications that the family at this time was very affluent and he may have been rather carried away with the idea that a life of wealth and ease was before him. Be that as it may, when only about 21 years of age he took up Barndon Farm of 150 acres -adjoining the Grange and sometimes referred to as Middle Grange Farm. In his mid twenties he married Sarah Fowler, daughter of John Fowler the baker of Tingewick (probably connected with Robert Fowler of Little Rollright, breeder of high-quality long-horn cattle. )
The census return for 1871 reads thus:-
Middle Grange Farm 150 acres.
Tredwell William 41 born at Oddington Sarah wife 40 born at Tingewick Elizabeth scholar 12 Jeffery " 10 William " 8 Mary Ann " 5 Thomas 2 Emma Parrott servant Hannah Butler " Wm, Knight " James Goom " [a connection - distant- through marriage]
[Pg 13] The four servants are included because they lived in the house. Besides them there would be farm workers from the village -probably at least four or five. One of the servants, perhaps William Knight, was tutor of those put down as scholars, since this family thought it to be beneath their dignity to attend a local school. In addition to the normal subjects some of them were taught music and played piano or organ very well. [Jeffery was organist at Oddington Parish Church for some years.]
The eldest son, John Fowler, not included in the return, may have already at the age of fourteen, begun his apprenticeship in the baking trade. After qualifying he became the baker at [Islip and later at] South Newington and made this his life's work. He married Cissie Howse, daughter of the local blacksmith. His eldest son, Harry, was killed in France on Aug. 4th 1916. He was a Bugler in the Oxford and Bucks, Light Infantry. Three of John's daughters, Emily, Kitty and Louise still live at South Newington, and the and the other -Ethel, who lives at Fencott married William Honour. Their daughter Doris married William North, and where should their home be but Barndon Farm of which they own the freehold! [I stayed with them for nearly 6 months in 1977.] John's youngest son Alfred lives near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Thomas married Marion Cook and after farming at Weston-on-the-Green for a short period returned to Barndon for a few months and seemed to move several times after that. They had two daughters-Winnifred who took up teaching, and Kathleen who married a Mr. Claridge and lives at Witney.
Richard, [my father] the youngest son of William and Sarah of Barndon, must have been born shortly after the census was taken, in 1871. Like other members of this family he was brought up as a well-to-do gentleman farmer and was said to be the most handsome, best dressed man to be seen at the Oxford market! At this period Barndon homestead was referred to by the family as "Oddington House" -perhaps because they thought it sounded more stylish.
There are stories of the teenage boys playing cards all the morning when they should have been outside working or supervising the hired men. Their uncle Tom of Oddington Manor is said to have seen one of them one day wearing a spotlessly white smock (which were still worn at that time) where-upon he suggested that a handful of old hay should be put in the copper next time it was washed, to make it look as if the wearer worked sometimes I
As the years went on, one can only think that in the depressed state of farming generally, together with extravagant living, plus a casual attitude towards the demands of the farm, any capital William and Sarah possessed must have been dwindling away and their income decreasing. Sarah's father left her something in his will in 1864. William would receive his share of his father's estate upon the death of his mother in 1875. Jeffery of Little Chesterton, his uncle, left him 200 pounds and Sarah 100 pounds besides something for their sons. But such legacies would only ease rather than cure the decline which had set in.

Please could someone look up Mary Brain, nee Tredwell (b 1866, Oxon). I think she was living in Luton, Beds. Mary ran off with the farm hand, Edward Brain and married him in Luton 1903. I'd like to know their address and whether they had any children.
many thanks
Angela
