kidsnpets Report 20 Sep 2011 17:40

hello

I have got a marriage certificate 19th july 1901 for Ruth Carter 108 bridge rd, hammersmith, father frederick james carter deceased and thomas william lancaster.

It is only Ruths ancestry i am interested in have done the lancaster side, but struggling with Ruths,
have what i think is them in 1901 census

Frederick age 51 labourer born hammersmith
Eliza 45 lambeth
christopher 14 hammersmith
ruth 13 hammersmith

so if this is the right census frederick must have died in 1901 between the census date and july.

any help getting further back with Ruths parents would be great.

thanks :-)

Check freebmd for a possible death for the father to confirm your thoughts........or otherwise

Who witnessed the marriage?

How old was Ruth?

She can hardly be the 13 -year-old................

What age did it give for Ruth on the marriage cert? Where was she living? What occupation was given for the Father?

Hi
I am researching my family tree, I am stuck on Frederick James Carter Hammersmith born 1851 approx, later married Eliza Pemberton, Buckinghamshire 1852.
I am trying to find his parents/grandparents etc, also his children,I have Ruth Carter about 1886 born London?.
I dont have access to the census at the moment so i am completely stuck. I am also trying to find a American Indian Link somewhere on this side of the family.
any help would be really appreciated.
many thanks

1891 census of Hammersmith RG12; Piece: 36; Folio 179; Page 38 - 34, Lower Mall

Frederick Carter 40 Head of Household born Hammersmith: a Labourer
Eliza Carter 35 Wife born Lambeth
Louisa Carter 11 dau Hammersmith
Christopher Carter 4 son ditto
Ruth Carter 3 dau ditto
Eliza Carter 10/12 dau ditto

big gap from the oldest to Christopher - might suggest 2nd marriage.

Hopefully the 1881 census will help.

RG11; Piece: 54; Folio: 93; Page: 48 Hammersmith, 8, Queens Road

Fredrick Carter 31 Head of House born Hammersmith: Bricklayers Labourer
Eliza Carter 24 Wife born Buckinghamshire, Burnham
'Louie' Carter 1 dau Hammersmith
Alice E. Carter 2 months old ditto

hmmm, seems like the same lady agewise, wonder why 1891 says Lambeth?

going back to Frederick with his parents in 1861 Hammersmith

Frederick J Carter 33 Head of Household born Middx, St Lukes: a Coach Painter
Elizabeth Carter 30 Wife born Berkshire, Reading
Frederick Carter 9 son born Hammersmith
Walter Carter 8 son ditto
Elizabeth Carter 6 dau ditto
Louisa Carter 4 dau ditto
Mary Carter 2 dau ditto
Charles Carter 5 Mo son ditto

Theres a SEP Q 1848 Kensington District marriage of a Frederick J Carter, but no Elizabeths on the page.

Thats a real shame, as its going to be harder getting back further given the # of Freds on the 1841.

Frederick Carter & Eliza Pemberton married Sept 1/4 1878 Fulham 1a 420 .

If you don't already have it, the marriage cert should confirm his father's name & occupation.

well, we are back pre-photography days on the male Carter Line - it could be there was something on one of the female lines ?

Or perhaps another male Carter from the family shown in 1861 married an Amerin ?

no more clues as to the period / place ?

sorry lost my connection so couldnt reply,

It says ruth is 21 it is possible it is 1907 not 1901 the writing is bad,
and Ruths father is a general labourer, witnesses are G and L Smith i think,

thanks :-)

Kim Report 20 Sep 2011 18:58

The only way to further it is, I think, to order a birth certificate for Frederick James Carter, Ruth's father...that way you will confirm his mother's maiden name, then you can trace their marriage, get their fathers' name and find them in 1841.

I ran a search on births of Frederick Carter in Kensington (the district which covers Hammersmith) between 1849 and 1852. There were three Fredericks, but only one had the middle name James
