Pleasure to help Marc - I know from personal experience how elusive these Irish ancestors can be!
I do think that Benjamin was probably the only child born in Ireland but I am not seeing a birth for him either as Divine, Duffin or Duffy!
Daughter Anne's birth may be a little easier knowing that she was 9 months old when the census was taken on 2/3 April 1871.
Here it is - yet another spelling variation!
1870 DUFFIE ANN F BO'NESS /WEST LOTHIAN 663/00 0114

Forgot!!
In 1874 when John was born they were staying at 46 Furnace Row so that ties the census in even more!
Thanks again.

rootgatherer both pieces of information could well be my family!
The marriage record is a definite possibilty as you said could have been down to the Irish accent.
I have found more different dates for the marriage now though...... March 1865(son John birth record) 23 Aug 1856(dau Rosina birth record) 5 Aug 1865(son Daniel birth record) So i think they didnt know themselves when they were married! John could write as his signature is on birth records but could still be the irish accent that made it be written incorrectly.
The census record looks like a definite as well. All the names and dates seem to tie in with what i have.
Thank you for taking the time to research for me and replying to my post. :-)

This looks like the marriage as the names of the bride and groom's fathers match what you have. The surname difference for John Duffin could just be down to the Irish accent if he was unable to read and write?

mgnv - yes info came from young John's birth record and no i havent found a 1871 census record for them, which makes me think they were still in Ireland then. Which again doesn't help make sense of the other census info. I have looked again at his and other sibling records and some have marriage in march 1865 and others have august 1865.
Glunterpake - thanks i will have a look at those sites.
Thanks for responding to my post. :)

I presume the marr info came from young John's b.rego.
Is there an 1871 Scottish census for them?
The GRO(I) index thru 1958 (excl N. Ireland post-partition) is available at: https://www.familysearch.org/s/collection/list#page=1®ion=EUROPE
One can purchase certs (or cheaper still, the uncertified images of the rego) via: http://www.groireland.ie/
The Irish 1901/1911 censuses are free at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ [Not heard of any release dates for next census (=1926 in both Irelands)]
Most City of Dublin parish registers are free online at: http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/ [There are also Carlow, Cork & Kerry OPRs there too]

What are the best sites for Irish records? I have pre 1875 irish ancestry and like most people have had difficulty finding information.
Can someone help me with this part of my ancestry? Anything at all would be very much appreciated.
What i do know is as follows;
John McLean Duffin born c1840 Ireland(census info) and Ann Pollock born c1845 Ireland(census info) were married in Rasharkin c1865.
Their children were Benjamin(e) born c 1866, James born c 1867 and Annie born c 1870. Their fourth child John was born in Scotland in 1874 so they moved from Ireland before that. John McLean Duffin parents were Daniel Duffin and Catherine Rogerson, taken from death record. Ann Pollock parents were John Pollock and Ann O'Hartan, taken from death record.
1881 scottish census has Annie and James born in Bo'ness but i have found no scottish birth records for them both. Benjamine listed as born Ireland. 1891 scottish census has Benjamine and James listed as born in Bo'ness. Annie is not listed on this census although i do know she was not married until 1893. Ann's father,John Pollock(Balloch on census), is on the 1881 census living in the same household as them. His death record from 1883 has his wife's name as Harlington, not O'Hartan as on ann's death record! His parents are listed on his death record as Adam Pollock and Mary McLeish.
I'm pretty sure that is everything I have at the moment. Thanks in advance for any help.
:-)
